teams of horses, ¹ 

riders on donkeys,

riders on camels,

he must be alert,

very alert.”

Isaiah 31:1

Egypt Will Disappoint

31:1 Those who go down to Egypt for help are as good as dead, ⁹ 

those who rely on war horses,

and trust in Egypt’s many chariots ¹⁰ 

and in their many, many horsemen. ¹¹ 

But they do not rely on the Holy One of Israel ¹² 

and do not seek help from the Lord.

[22:7]  ² tn The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

[22:7]  ³ tn Heb “taking a stand, take their stand.” The infinitive absolute emphasizes the following finite verb. The translation attempts to bring out this emphasis with the adverb “confidently.”

[43:17]  ³ tn Heb “led out chariots and horses.” The words “to destruction” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The verse refers to the destruction of the Egyptians at the Red Sea.
