Isaiah 22:18

Context

22:18 He will wind you up tightly into a ball

and throw you into a wide, open land. 1

There you will die,

and there with you will be your impressive chariots, 2

which bring disgrace to the house of your master. 3

Isaiah 36:12

Context
36:12 But the chief adviser said, “My master did not send me to speak these words only to your master and to you. 4  His message is also for the men who sit on the wall, for they will eat their own excrement and drink their own urine along with you!” 5

Isaiah 51:22

Context

51:22 This is what your sovereign master, 6  the Lord your God, says:

“Look, I have removed from your hand

the cup of intoxicating wine, 7

the goblet full of my anger. 8

You will no longer have to drink it.

[22:18]  1 tn Heb “and he will tightly [or “surely”] wind you [with] winding like a ball, to a land broad of hands [i.e., “sides”].”

[22:18]  2 tn Heb “and there the chariots of your splendor.”

[22:18]  3 sn Apparently the reference to chariots alludes to Shebna’s excessive pride, which in turn brings disgrace to the royal family.

[36:12]  4 tn Heb “To your master and to you did my master send me to speak these words?” The rhetorical question expects a negative answer.

[36:12]  5 tn Heb “[Is it] not [also] to the men…?” The rhetorical question expects the answer, “Yes, it is.”

[51:22]  7 tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

[51:22]  8 tn Heb “the cup of [= that causes] staggering” (so ASV, NAB, NRSV); NASB “the cup of reeling.”

[51:22]  9 tn Heb “the goblet of the cup of my anger.”
