Isaiah 24:18

24:18 The one who runs away from the sound of the terror

will fall into the pit; ¹ 

the one who climbs out of the pit,

will be trapped by the snare.

For the floodgates of the heavens ²  are opened up ³ 

and the foundations of the earth shake.

Isaiah 44:26

44:26 who fulfills the oracles of his prophetic servants ⁴ 

and brings to pass the announcements ⁵  of his messengers,

who says about Jerusalem, ⁶  ‘She will be inhabited,’

Isaiah 49:26

49:26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh;

they will get drunk on their own blood, as if it were wine. ⁷ 

Then all humankind ⁸  will recognize that

I am the Lord, your deliverer,

[24:18]  ³ sn The language reflects the account of the Noahic Flood (see Gen 7:11).

[44:26]  ⁴ tn Heb “the word of his servant.” The following context indicates that the Lord’s prophets are in view.

[44:26]  ⁵ tn Heb “counsel.” The Hebrew term עֵצָה (’etsah) probably refers here to the divine plan as announced by the prophets. See HALOT 867 s.v. I עֵצָה.

[49:26]  ⁷ sn Verse 26a depicts siege warfare and bloody defeat. The besieged enemy will be so starved they will their own flesh. The bloodstained bodies lying on the blood-soaked battle site will look as if they collapsed in drunkenness.
