Isaiah 24:8-9

Context

24:8 The happy sound 1  of the tambourines stops,

the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt,

the happy sound of the harp ceases.

24:9 They no longer sing and drink wine; 2

the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.

Isaiah 32:10

Context

32:10 In a year’s time 3

you carefree ones will shake with fear,

for the grape 4  harvest will fail,

and the fruit harvest will not arrive.

Jeremiah 48:33

Context

48:33 Joy and gladness will disappear

from the fruitful land of Moab. 5

I will stop the flow of wine from the winepresses.

No one will stomp on the grapes there and shout for joy. 6

The shouts there will be shouts of soldiers,

not the shouts of those making wine. 7

Amos 5:11

Context

5:11 Therefore, because you make the poor pay taxes on their crops 8

and exact a grain tax from them,

you will not live in the houses you built with chiseled stone,

nor will you drink the wine from the fine 9  vineyards you planted. 10

Amos 5:17

Context

5:17 In all the vineyards there will be wailing,

for I will pass through 11  your midst,” says the Lord.

Habakkuk 3:17-18

Context

3:17 When 12  the fig tree does not bud,

and there are no grapes on the vines;

when the olive trees do not produce, 13

and the fields yield no crops; 14

when the sheep disappear 15  from the pen,

and there are no cattle in the stalls,

3:18 I will rejoice because of 16  the Lord;

I will be happy because of the God who delivers me!

Zephaniah 1:13

Context

1:13 Their wealth will be stolen

and their houses ruined!

They will not live in the houses they have built,

nor will they drink the wine from the vineyards they have planted.

[24:8]  1 tn Heb “the joy” (again later in this verse).

[24:9]  2 tn Heb “with a song they do not drink wine.”

[32:10]  3 tn Heb “days upon a year.”

[32:10]  4 tn Or perhaps, “olive.” See 24:13.

[48:33]  5 tn Heb “from the garden land, even from the land of Moab.” Comparison with the parallel passage in Isa 16:10 and the translation of the Greek text here (which has only “the land of Moab”) suggest that the second phrase is appositional to the first.

[48:33]  6 tn Heb “no one will tread [the grapes] with shout of joy.”

[48:33]  7 tn Heb “shouts will not be shouts.” The text has been expanded contextually to explain that the shouts of those treading grapes in winepresses will come to an end (v. 33a-d) and be replaced by the shouts of the soldiers who trample down the vineyards (v. 32e-f). Compare 25:30 and 51:41 for the idea.

[5:11]  8 tn Traditionally, “because you trample on the poor” (cf. KJV, ASV, NAB, NIV, NRSV, NLT). The traditional view derives the verb from בּוּס (bus, “to trample”; cf. Isa. 14:25), but more likely it is cognate to an Akkadian verb meaning “to exact an agricultural tax” (see H. R. Cohen, Biblical Hapax Legomena [SBLDS], 49; S. M. Paul, Amos [Hermeneia], 172-73).

[5:11]  9 tn Or “lovely”; KJV, NASB, NRSV “pleasant”; NAB “choice”; NIV “lush.”

[5:11]  10 tn Heb “Houses of chiseled stone you built, but you will not live in them. Fine vineyards you planted, but you will not drink their wine.”

[5:17]  11 sn The expression pass through your midst alludes to Exod 12:12, where the Lord announced he would “pass through” Egypt and bring death to the Egyptian firstborn.

[3:17]  12 tn Or “though.”

[3:17]  13 tn Heb “the produce of the olive disappoints.”

[3:17]  14 tn Heb “food.”

[3:17]  15 tn Or “are cut off.”

[3:18]  16 tn Or “in.”
