Romans 2:6
Context2:6 He 18 will reward 19 each one according to his works: 20
[29:22] 1 tn Heb “So this is what the Lord says to the house of Jacob, the one who ransomed Abraham.” The relative pronoun must refer back to “the Lord,” not to the immediately preceding “Jacob.” It is uncertain to what event in Abraham’s experience this refers. Perhaps the name “Abraham” stands here by metonymy for his descendants through Jacob. If so, the Exodus is in view.
[29:22] 2 tn Heb “and his face will no longer be pale.”
[49:23] 3 tn Heb “your,” but Zion here stands by metonymy for her children (see v. 22b).
[49:23] 4 tn Heb “you.” See the preceding note.
[49:23] 5 tn Or “at your feet” (NAB, NIV); NLT “from your feet.”
[54:4] 6 tn Or “embarrassed”; NASB “humiliated…disgraced.”
[54:4] 7 tn Another option is to translate, “the disgrace of our widowhood” (so NRSV). However, the following context (vv. 6-7) refers to Zion’s husband, the Lord, abandoning her, not dying. This suggests that an אַלְמָנָה (’almanah) was a woman who had lost her husband, whether by death or abandonment.
[25:3] 8 tn Heb “those who deal in treachery in vain.” The adverb רֵיקָם (reqam, “in vain”) probably refers to the failure (or futility) of their efforts. Another option is to understand it as meaning “without cause” (cf. NIV “without excuse”; NRSV “wantonly treacherous”).
[2:26] 9 tn Heb “you will surely eat and be satisfied.”
[3:11] 10 sn The second person verbs and pronouns are feminine singular, indicating that personified Jerusalem is addressed here.
[3:11] 11 tn Heb “In that day you not be ashamed because of all your actions, [in] which you rebelled against me.”
[3:11] 12 tn Heb “the arrogant ones of your pride.”
[9:33] 13 tn Grk “a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.”
[9:33] 14 sn A quotation from Isa 28:16; 8:14.
[10:11] 15 sn A quotation from Isa 28:16.
[10:1] 16 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:13.
[10:1] 17 tn Grk “on behalf of them”; the referent (Paul’s fellow Israelites) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
[2:6] 18 tn Grk “who.” The relative pronoun was converted to a personal pronoun and, because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
[2:6] 19 tn Or “will render,” “will recompense.” In this context Paul is setting up a hypothetical situation, not stating that salvation is by works.
[2:6] 20 sn A quotation from Ps 62:12; Prov 24:12; a close approximation to Matt 16:27.
