[3:2]  1 tn Heb “elder” (so ASV, NAB, NIV, NRSV); NCV “older leaders.”

[40:13]  2 tn Perhaps the verb is used metonymically here in the sense of “advises” (note the following line).

[40:13]  3 tn In this context רוּחַ (ruakh) likely refers to the Lord’s “mind,” or mental faculties, rather than his personal Spirit (see BDB 925 s.v.).

[40:13]  4 tn Heb “or [as] the man of his counsel causes him to know?”

[3:5]  3 tn Heb “man against man, and a man against his neighbor.”

[3:5]  4 tn Heb “and those lightly esteemed those who are respected.” The verb רָהַב (rahav) does double duty in the parallelism.

[5:3]  4 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

[5:3]  5 tn Heb “men,” but in a generic sense.

[19:2]  5 tn Heb I will provoke Egypt against Egypt” (NAB similar).

[19:2]  6 tn Heb “and they will fight, a man against his brother, and a man against his neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.” Civil strife will extend all the way from the domestic level to the provincial arena.

[5:7]  6 tn Or “For” (KJV, ASV, NASB, NRSV).

[5:7]  7 tn Heb “the house of Israel” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[5:7]  8 tn Heb “men,” but in a generic sense.

[5:7]  9 tn Heb “but, look, disobedience.” The precise meaning of מִשְׂפָּח (mishpakh), which occurs only here in the OT, is uncertain. Some have suggested a meaning “bloodshed.” The term is obviously chosen for its wordplay value; it sounds very much like מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat, “justice”). The sound play draws attention to the point being made; the people have not met the Lord’s expectations.

[5:7]  10 tn Heb “but, look, a cry for help.” The verb (“he waited”) does double duty in the parallelism. צְעָקָה (tsaqah) refers to the cries for help made by the oppressed. It sounds very much like צְדָקָה (tsÿdaqah, “fairness”). The sound play draws attention to the point being made; the people have not met the Lord’s expectations.

[13:14]  7 tn Or “like a gazelle being chased.” The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

[13:14]  8 tn Heb “his people” (cf. KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV) or “his nation” (cf. TEV “their own countries”).

[55:7]  8 tn Heb “Let the wicked one abandon his way.” The singular is collective.

[55:7]  9 tn Heb “and the man of evil his thoughts.” The singular is collective.

[55:7]  10 tn Heb “let him return.” The singular is collective, meaning “let them.”

[55:7]  11 tn The imperfect with vav (ו) conjunctive after the jussive indicates purpose/result.

[55:7]  12 sn The appeal and promise of vv. 6-7 echoes the language of Deut 4:25-31; 30:1-10; and 1 Kgs 8:46-53, all of which anticipate the exile and speak of the prerequisites for restoration.

[36:16]  9 tn Heb “make with me a blessing and come out to me.”
