Isaiah 3:6

3:6 Indeed, a man will grab his brother

right in his father’s house 1  and say, 2

you be our leader!

This heap of ruins will be under your control.’ 3

Isaiah 10:16

Context

10:16 For this reason 4  the sovereign master, the Lord who commands armies, will make his healthy ones emaciated. 5  His majestic glory will go up in smoke. 6

Isaiah 14:9

Context

14:9 Sheol 7  below is stirred up about you,

ready to meet you when you arrive.

It rouses 8  the spirits of the dead for you,

all the former leaders of the earth; 9

it makes all the former kings of the nations

rise from their thrones. 10

Isaiah 25:10

Context

25:10 For the Lord’s power will make this mountain secure. 11

Moab will be trampled down where it stands, 12

as a heap of straw is trampled down in 13  a manure pile.

Isaiah 43:3

Context

43:3 For I am the Lord your God,

the Holy One of Israel, 14  your deliverer.

I have handed over Egypt as a ransom price,

Ethiopia and Seba 15  in place of you.

Isaiah 46:7

Context

46:7 They put it on their shoulder and carry it;

they put it in its place and it just stands there;

it does not 16  move from its place.

Even when someone cries out to it, it does not reply;

it does not deliver him from his distress.

Isaiah 61:7

Context

61:7 Instead of shame, you will get a double portion; 17

instead of humiliation, they will rejoice over the land they receive. 18

Yes, 19  they will possess a double portion in their land

and experience lasting joy.

[3:6]  1 tn Heb “[in] the house of his father” (so ASV); NIV “at his father’s home.”

[3:6]  2 tn The words “and say” are supplied for stylistic reasons.

[3:6]  3 tn Heb “your hand”; NASB “under your charge.”

[10:16]  4 sn The irrational arrogance of the Assyrians (v. 15) will prompt the judgment about to be described.

[10:16]  5 tn Heb “will send leanness against his healthy ones”; NASB, NIV “will send a wasting disease.”

[10:16]  6 tc Heb “and in the place of his glory burning will burn, like the burning of fire.” The highly repetitive text (יֵקַד יְקֹד כִּיקוֹד אֵשׁ, yeqad yiqod kiqodesh) may be dittographic; if the second consonantal sequence יקד is omitted, the text would read “and in the place of his glory, it will burn like the burning of fire.”

[14:9]  7 sn Sheol is the proper name of the subterranean world which was regarded as the land of the dead.

[14:9]  8 tn Heb “arousing.” The form is probably a Polel infinitive absolute, rather than a third masculine singular perfect, for Sheol is grammatically feminine (note “stirred up”). See GKC 466 §145.t.

[14:9]  9 tn Heb “all the rams of the earth.” The animal epithet is used metaphorically here for leaders. See HALOT 903 s.v. *עַתּוּד.

[14:9]  10 tn Heb “lifting from their thrones all the kings of the nations.” הֵקִים (heqim, a Hiphil perfect third masculine singular) should be emended to an infinitive absolute (הָקֵים, haqem). See the note on “rouses” earlier in the verse.

[25:10]  10 tn Heb “for the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain”; TEV “will protect Mount Zion”; NCV “will protect (rest on NLT) Jerusalem.”

[25:10]  11 tn Heb “under him,” i.e., “in his place.”

[25:10]  12 tc The marginal reading (Qere) is בְּמוֹ (bÿmo, “in”). The consonantal text (Kethib) has בְּמִי (bÿmi, “in the water of”).

[43:3]  13 sn See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in 1:4.

[43:3]  14 sn Seba is not the same as Sheba in southern Arabia; cf. Gen 1:10; 1 Chr 1:9.

[46:7]  16 tn Or perhaps, “cannot,” here and in the following two lines. The imperfect forms can indicate capability.

[61:7]  19 tn Heb “instead of your shame, a double portion.”

[61:7]  20 tn Heb “and [instead of] humiliation they will rejoice [over] their portion.” The term תָחָת (takhat, “instead of”) is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

[61:7]  21 tn Heb “therefore” (so KJV, NASB); NIV “and so.”
