thickets and weeds will grow 2  in her fortified cities.

Jackals will settle there;

ostriches will live there. 3

the parched ground springs of water.

Where jackals once lived and sprawled out,

grass, reeds, and papyrus will grow.

Isaiah 65:10

65:10 Sharon 4  will become a pasture for sheep,

and the Valley of Achor 5  a place where cattle graze; 6

they will belong to my people, who seek me. 7

Isaiah 27:10

Context

27:10 For the fortified city 8  is left alone;

it is a deserted settlement

Calves 9  graze there;

they lie down there

and eat its branches bare. 10

a tent that stays put; 13

its stakes will never be pulled up;

none of its ropes will snap in two.

[32:18]  1 tn Or “in safe resting places”; NAB, NRSV “quiet resting places.”

[34:13]  2 tn The words “will grow” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[34:13]  3 tc Heb “and she will be a settlement for wild dogs, a dwelling place for ostriches.” The translation assumes an emendation of חָצִיר (khatsir, “grass”) to חָצֵר (khatser, “settlement”). One of the Qumran scrolls of Isaiah (1QIsaa) supports this emendation (cf. HALOT 344 s.v. II חָצִיר)

[65:10]  3 sn Sharon was a plain located to the west, along the Mediterranean coast north of Joppa and south of Carmel.

[65:10]  4 sn The Valley of Achor (“Achor” means “trouble” in Hebrew) was the site of Achan’s execution. It was located to the east, near Jericho.

[65:10]  5 tn Heb “a resting place for cattle”; NASB, NIV “for herds.”

[65:10]  6 tn Heb “for my people who seek me.”

[27:10]  4 sn The identity of this city is uncertain. The context suggests that an Israelite city, perhaps Samaria or Jerusalem, is in view. For discussions of interpretive options see J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:496-97, and Paul L. Redditt, “Once Again, the City in Isaiah 24-27,” HAR 10 (1986), 332.

[27:10]  5 tn The singular form in the text is probably collective.

[27:10]  6 tn Heb “and destroy her branches.” The city is the antecedent of the third feminine singular pronominal suffix. Apparently the city is here compared to a tree. See also v. 11.

[33:20]  5 tn Heb “your eyes” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[33:20]  6 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

[33:20]  7 tn Or “that does not travel”; NASB “which shall not be folded.”
