Isaiah 32:9

Context
The Lord Will Give True Security

32:9 You complacent 1  women,

get up and listen to me!

You carefree 2  daughters,

pay attention to what I say!

They will say, “We will provide 4  our own food,

we will provide 5  our own clothes;

but let us belong to you 6 

take away our shame!” 7

Context

27:11 When its branches get brittle, 8  they break;

women come and use them for kindling. 9 

For these people lack understanding, 10 

therefore the one who made them has no compassion on them;

the one who formed them has no mercy on them.

[4:1]  7 sn This refers to the humiliation of being unmarried and childless. The women’s words reflect the cultural standards of ancient Israel, where a woman’s primary duties were to be a wife and mother.

[27:11]  5 tn Heb “are dry” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[27:11]  6 tn Heb “women come [and] light it.” The city is likened to a dead tree with dried up branches that is only good for firewood.

[27:11]  7 tn Heb “for not a people of understanding [is] he.”
