Isaiah 33:2

33:2 Lord, be merciful to us! We wait for you.

Give us strength each morning! ¹ 

Deliver us when distress comes. ²

38:7 Isaiah replied, ³  “This is your sign from the Lord confirming that the Lord will do what he has said:

45:17 Israel will be delivered once and for all by the Lord; ⁴ 

you will never again be ashamed or humiliated. ⁵ 

[33:2]  ¹ tn Heb “Be their arm each morning.” “Arm” is a symbol for strength. The mem suffixed to the noun has been traditionally understood as a third person suffix, but this is contrary to the context, where the people speak of themselves in the first person. The mem (מ) is probably enclitic with ellipsis of the pronoun, which can be supplied from the context. See J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:589, n. 1.

[33:2]  ² tn Heb “[Be] also our deliverance in the time of distress.”

[38:7]  ³ tn The words “Isaiah replied” are supplied in the translation for clarification. In the present form of the Hebrew text v. 7 is joined directly to v. 6, but vv. 21-22, if original to Isaiah 38, must be inserted here. See 2 Kgs 20:7-8.

[45:17]  ⁵ tn Heb “Israel will be delivered by the Lord [with] a permanent deliverance.”

[45:17]  ⁶ tn Heb “you will not be ashamed and you will not be humiliated for ages of future time.”
