Isaiah 4:1

Context

4:1 Seven women will grab hold of

one man at that time. 1 

They will say, “We will provide 2  our own food,

we will provide 3  our own clothes;

but let us belong to you 4 

take away our shame!” 5

13:4 6 There is a loud noise on the mountains –

it sounds like a large army! 7 

There is great commotion among the kingdoms 8 

nations are being assembled!

The Lord who commands armies is mustering

forces for battle.

Isaiah 16:10

16:10 Joy and happiness disappear from the orchards,

and in the vineyards no one rejoices or shouts;

58:8 Then your light will shine like the sunrise; 13

Context

60:20 Your sun will no longer set;

your moon will not disappear; 17 

the Lord will be your permanent source of light;

[4:1]  4 tn Heb “only let your name be called over us.” The Hebrew idiom “call the name over” indicates ownership. See 2 Sam 12:28, and BDB 896 s.v. I ָקרָא Niph. 2.d.(4). The language reflects the cultural reality of ancient Israel, where women were legally the property of their husbands.

[4:1]  5 sn This refers to the humiliation of being unmarried and childless. The women’s words reflect the cultural standards of ancient Israel, where a woman’s primary duties were to be a wife and mother.

[13:4]  6 sn In vv. 4-10 the prophet appears to be speaking, since the Lord is referred to in the third person. However, since the Lord refers to himself in the third person later in this chapter (see v. 13), it is possible that he speaks throughout the chapter.

[13:4]  7 tn Heb “a sound, a roar [is] on the mountains, like many people.”

[13:4]  8 tn Heb “a sound, tumult of kingdoms.”

[60:20]  31 sn In this verse “sun” and “moon” refer to the Lord’s light, which will replace the sun and moon (see v. 19). Light here symbolizes the restoration of divine blessing and prosperity in conjunction with the Lord’s presence. See 30:26.
