Isaiah 4:5

Context

4:5 Then the Lord will create

over all of Mount Zion 1 

and over its convocations

a cloud and smoke by day

and a bright flame of fire by night; 2 

indeed a canopy will accompany the Lord’s glorious presence. 3 

Isaiah 5:24

Context

5:24 Therefore, as flaming fire 4  devours straw,

and dry grass disintegrates in the flames,

so their root will rot,

and their flower will blow away like dust. 5 

For they have rejected the law of the Lord who commands armies,

Context

30:33 For 8  the burial place is already prepared; 9 

it has been made deep and wide for the king. 10 

The firewood is piled high on it. 11 

The Lord’s breath, like a stream flowing with brimstone,

nor do they comprehend or understand and say to themselves:

‘I burned half of it in the fire –

yes, I baked bread over the coals;

I roasted meat and ate it.

With the rest of it should I make a disgusting idol?

[4:5]  1 tn Heb “over all the place, Mount Zion.” Cf. NLT “Jerusalem”; CEV “the whole city.”

[4:5]  2 tn Heb “a cloud by day, and smoke, and brightness of fire, a flame by night.” Though the accents in the Hebrew text suggest otherwise, it might be preferable to take “smoke” with what follows, since one would expect smoke to accompany fire.

[4:5]  3 tn Heb “indeed (or “for”) over all the glory, a canopy.” This may allude to Exod 40:34-35, where a cloud overshadows the meeting tent as it is filled with God’s glory.

[5:24]  4 tn Heb “a tongue of fire” (so NASB), referring to a tongue-shaped flame.

[5:24]  5 sn They are compared to a flowering plant that withers quickly in a hot, arid climate.

[30:33]  8 tc The Hebrew text reads literally, “for arranged from before [or “yesterday”] is [?].” The meaning of תָּפְתֶּה (tafÿteh), which occurs only here, is unknown. The translation above (as with most English versions) assumes an emendation to תֹּפֶת (tofet, “Topheth”; cf. NASB, NIV, NLT) and places the final hey (ה) on the beginning of the next word as an interrogative particle. Topheth was a place near Jerusalem used as a burial ground (see Jer 7:32; 19:11).

[30:33]  9 tn The Hebrew text reads literally, “Also it is made ready for the king, one makes it deep and wide.” If one takes the final hey (ה) on תָּפְתֶּה (tafÿteh) and prefixes it to גָּם (gam) as an interrogative particle (see the preceding note), one can translate, “Is it also made ready for the king?” In this case the question is rhetorical and expects an emphatic affirmative answer, “Of course it is!”

[30:33]  10 tn Heb “its pile of wood, fire and wood one makes abundant.”

[44:19]  10 tn There is no formal interrogative sign here, but the context seems to indicate these are rhetorical questions. See GKC 473 §150.a.
