Isaiah 41:2

Context

41:2 Who stirs up this one from the east? 1

Who 2  officially commissions him for service? 3

He hands nations over to him, 4

and enables him to subdue 5  kings.

He makes them like dust with his sword,

like windblown straw with his bow. 6

Joshua 24:2-4

Context
24:2 Joshua told all the people, “Here is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘In the distant past your ancestors 7  lived beyond the Euphrates River, 8  including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor. They worshiped 9  other gods, 24:3 but I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates 10  and brought him into 11  the entire land of Canaan. I made his descendants numerous; I gave him Isaac, 24:4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I assigned Mount Seir, 12  while Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.

Nehemiah 9:7-38

Context

9:7 “You are the LORD God who chose Abram and brought him forth from Ur of the Chaldeans. You changed his name to Abraham. 9:8 When you perceived that his heart was faithful toward you, you established a 13  covenant with him to give his descendants 14  the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, and the Girgashites. You have fulfilled your promise, 15  for you are righteous.

9:9 “You saw the affliction of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea. 16  9:10 You performed awesome signs 17  against Pharaoh, against his servants, and against all the people of his land, for you knew that the Egyptians 18  had acted presumptuously 19  against them. You made for yourself a name that is celebrated to this day. 9:11 You split the sea before them, and they crossed through 20  the sea on dry ground! But you threw their pursuers 21  into the depths, like a stone into surging 22  waters. 9:12 You guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and with a pillar of fire by night to illumine for them the path they were to travel.

9:13 “You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven. You provided them with just judgments, true laws, and good statutes and commandments. 9:14 You made known to them your holy Sabbath; you issued commandments, statutes, and law to them through 23  Moses your servant. 9:15 You provided bread from heaven for them in their time of hunger, and you brought forth water from the rock for them in their time of thirst. You told them to enter in order to possess the land that you had sworn 24  to give them.

9:16 “But they – our ancestors 25  – behaved presumptuously; they rebelled 26  and did not obey your commandments. 9:17 They refused to obey and did not recall your miracles that you had performed among them. Instead, they rebelled and appointed a leader to return to their bondage in Egypt. 27  But you are a God of forgiveness, merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and unfailing in your loyal love. 28  You did not abandon them, 9:18 even when they made a cast image of a calf for themselves and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up from Egypt,’ or when they committed atrocious 29  blasphemies.

9:19 “Due to your great compassion you did not abandon them in the desert. The pillar of cloud did not stop guiding them in the path by day, 30  nor did the pillar of fire stop illuminating for them by night the path on which they should travel. 9:20 You imparted your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths; you provided water for their thirst. 9:21 For forty years you sustained them. Even in the desert they never lacked anything. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.

9:22 “You gave them kingdoms and peoples, and you allocated them to every corner of the land. 31  They inherited the land of King Sihon of Heshbon 32  and the land of King Og of Bashan. 9:23 You multiplied their descendants like the stars of the sky. You brought them to the land you had told their ancestors to enter in order to possess. 9:24 Their descendants 33  entered and possessed the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites who were the inhabitants of the land. You delivered them into their hand, together with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with as they pleased. 9:25 They captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took possession of houses full of all sorts of good things – wells previously dug, vineyards, olive trees, and fruit trees in abundance. They ate until they were full 34  and grew fat. They enjoyed to the full your great goodness.

9:26 “Nonetheless they grew disobedient and rebelled against you; they disregarded your law. 35  They killed your prophets who had solemnly admonished them in order to cause them to return to you. They committed atrocious blasphemies. 9:27 Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who oppressed them. But in the time of their distress they called to you, and you heard from heaven. In your abundant compassion you provided them with deliverers to rescue them from 36  their adversaries.

9:28 “Then, when they were at rest again, they went back to doing evil before you. Then you abandoned them to 37  their enemies, and they gained dominion over them. When they again cried out to you, in your compassion you heard from heaven and rescued them time and again. 9:29 And you solemnly admonished them in order to return them to your law, but they behaved presumptuously and did not obey your commandments. They sinned against your ordinances – those by which an individual, if he obeys them, 38  will live. They boldly turned from you; 39  they rebelled 40  and did not obey. 9:30 You prolonged your kindness 41  with them for many years, and you solemnly admonished them by your Spirit through your prophets. Still they paid no attention, 42  so you delivered them into the hands of the neighboring peoples. 43  9:31 However, due to your abundant mercy you did not do away with them altogether; you did not abandon them. For you are a merciful and compassionate God.

9:32 “So now, our God – the great, powerful, and awesome God, who keeps covenant fidelity 44  – do not regard as inconsequential 45  all the hardship that has befallen us – our kings, our leaders, our priests, our prophets, our ancestors, and all your people – from the days of the kings of Assyria until this very day! 9:33 You are righteous with regard to all that has happened to us, for you have acted faithfully. 46  It is we who have been in the wrong! 9:34 Our kings, our leaders, our priests, and our ancestors have not kept your law. They have not paid attention to your commandments or your testimonies by which you have solemnly admonished them. 9:35 Even when they were in their kingdom and benefiting from your incredible 47  goodness that you had lavished 48  on them in the spacious and fertile land you had set 49  before them, they did not serve you, nor did they turn from their evil practices.

9:36 “So today we are slaves! In the very land you gave to our ancestors to eat its fruit and to enjoy 50  its good things – we are slaves! 9:37 Its abundant produce goes to the kings you have placed over us due to our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they see fit, 51  and we are in great distress!

The People Pledge to be Faithful

9:38 (10:1) 52  “Because of all of this we are entering into a binding covenant 53  in written form; 54  our leaders, our Levites, and our priests have affixed their names 55  on the sealed document.”

Psalms 107:2-3

those whom he delivered 57  from the power 58  of the enemy,

107:3 and gathered from foreign lands, 59

from east and west,

from north and south.

Luke 13:29

Context
13:29 Then 60  people 61  will come from east and west, and from north and south, and take their places at the banquet table 62  in the kingdom of God. 63

Revelation 5:9

“You are worthy to take the scroll

and to open its seals

because you were killed, 65

and at the cost of your own blood 66  you have purchased 67  for God

persons 68  from every tribe, language, 69  people, and nation.

[41:2]  1 sn The expression this one from the east refers to the Persian conqueror Cyrus, as later texts indicate (see 44:28-45:6; 46:11; 48:14-16).

[41:2]  2 tn The interrogative particle is understood by ellipsis.

[41:2]  3 tn Heb “[in] righteousness called him to his foot.”

[41:2]  4 tn Heb “he [the Lord] places before him [Cyrus] nations.”

[41:2]  5 tn The verb יַרְדְּ (yardÿ) is an otherwise unattested Hiphil form from רָדָה (radah, “rule”). But the Hiphil makes no sense with “kings” as object; one must understand an ellipsis and supply “him” (Cyrus) as the object. The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa has יוֹרִד (yorid), which appears to be a Hiphil form from יָרַד (yarad, “go down”). Others suggest reading יָרֹד (yarod), a Qal form from רָדַד (radad, “beat down”).

[41:2]  6 sn The point is that they are powerless before Cyrus’ military power and scatter before him.

[24:2]  7 tn Heb “your fathers.”

[24:2]  8 tn Heb “the river,” referring to the Euphrates. This has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[24:2]  9 tn Or “served.”

[24:3]  10 tn Heb “the river,” referring to the Euphrates. This has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[24:3]  11 tn Or “through.”

[24:4]  12 tn Heb “I gave to Esau Mount Seir to possess it.”

[9:8]  13 tn Heb “the” (so NAB).

[9:8]  14 tn Heb “seed.”

[9:8]  15 tn Heb “your words.”

[9:9]  16 tn Heb “the Sea of Reeds.” Traditionally this is identified as the Red Sea, and the modern designation has been used in the translation for clarity.

[9:10]  17 tn Heb “signs and wonders.” This phrase is a hendiadys. The second noun functions adjectivally, while the first noun retains its full nominal sense: “awesome signs” or “miraculous signs.”

[9:10]  18 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the Egyptians) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:10]  19 tn Or “arrogantly” (so NASB); NRSV “insolently.”

[9:11]  20 tn Heb “in the midst of.”

[9:11]  21 tn Heb “those who pursued them.”

[9:11]  22 tn Heb “mighty.”

[9:14]  23 tn Heb “by the hand of.”

[9:15]  24 tn Heb “had lifted your hand.”

[9:16]  25 tn Heb “and our fathers.” The vav is explicative.

[9:16]  26 tn Heb “they stiffened their neck” (so also in the following verse).

[9:17]  27 tc The present translation follows a few medieval Hebrew MSS and the LXX in reading בְּמִצְרָיִם (bÿmitsrayim, “in Egypt”; so also NAB, NASB, NRSV, TEV, NLT) rather than the MT reading בְּמִרְיָם (bÿmiryam, “in their rebellion”).

[9:17]  28 tc The translation follows the Qere reading חֶסֶד (khesed, “loyal love”) rather than the Kethib reading וְחֶסֶד (vÿkhesed, “and loyal love”) of the MT.

[9:18]  29 tn Heb “great.”

[9:19]  30 tn Heb “did not turn from them by day to guide them in the path.”

[9:22]  31 tn The words “of the land” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for clarity.

[9:22]  32 tc Most Hebrew MSS read “the land of Sihon and the land of the king of Heshbon.” The present translation (along with NAB, NASB, NIV, NCV, NRSV, CEV, NLT) follows the reading of one Hebrew MS, the LXX, and the Vulgate.

[9:24]  33 tn Heb “the sons.”

[9:25]  34 tn Heb “they ate and were sated.” This expression is a hendiadys. The first verb retains its full verbal sense, while the second functions adverbially: “they ate and were filled” = “they ate until they were full.”

[9:26]  35 tn Heb “they cast your law behind their backs.”

[9:27]  36 tn Heb “from the hand of” (so NASB, NIV); NAB “from the power of.”

[9:28]  37 tn Heb “in the hand of” (so KJV, ASV); NAB “to the power of.”

[9:29]  38 tn Heb “if a man keep.” See note on the word “obey” in Neh 1:5.

[9:29]  39 tn Heb “they gave a stubborn shoulder.”

[9:29]  40 tn Heb “they stiffened their neck.”

[9:30]  41 tn The Hebrew expression here is elliptical. The words “your kindness” are not included in the Hebrew text, but have been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[9:30]  42 tn Heb “did not give ear to.”

[9:30]  43 tn Heb “the peoples of the lands.”

[9:32]  44 tn Heb “the covenant and loyal love.” The expression is a hendiadys. The second noun retains its full nominal sense, while the first functions adjectivally: “the covenant and loyalty” = covenant fidelity.

[9:32]  45 tn Heb “do not let it seem small in your sight.”

[9:33]  46 tn Heb “you have done truth.”

[9:35]  47 tn Heb “great.”

[9:35]  48 tn Heb “given them.”

[9:35]  49 tn Heb “given.”

[9:36]  50 tn The expression “to enjoy” is not included in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[9:37]  51 tn Heb “according to their desire.”

[9:38]  52 sn Beginning with 9:38, the verse numbers through 10:39 in the English Bible differ from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 9:38 ET = 10:1 HT, 10:1 ET = 10:2 HT, 10:2 ET = 10:3 HT, etc., through 10:39 ET = 10:40 HT. Beginning with 11:1 the verse numbers in the ET and HT are again the same.

[9:38]  53 tn Heb “we are cutting.”

[9:38]  54 tn Heb “and writing.”

[9:38]  55 tn Heb “our leaders, our Levites, and our priests on the sealed document.” The Hebrew text is elliptical here; the words “have affixed their names” are supplied in the translation for clarity and for stylistic reasons. Cf. v. 2.

[107:2]  56 tn Or “let the redeemed of the Lord say [so].”

[107:2]  57 tn Or “redeemed.”

[107:2]  58 tn Heb “hand.”

[107:3]  59 tn Heb “from lands.” The word “foreign” is supplied in the translation for clarification.

[13:29]  60 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events in the discourse.

[13:29]  61 tn Grk “they”; the referent (people who will come to participate in the kingdom) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[13:29]  62 tn Grk “and recline at table,” as 1st century middle eastern meals were not eaten while sitting at a table, but while reclining on one’s side on the floor with the head closest to the low table and the feet farthest away. The word “banquet” has been supplied to clarify for the modern reader the festive nature of the imagery The banquet imagery is a way to describe the fellowship and celebration of accompanying those who are included as the people of God at the end.

[13:29]  63 sn The kingdom of God is a major theme of Jesus. It is a realm in which Jesus rules and to which those who trust him belong. See Luke 6:20; 11:20; 17:20-21.

[5:9]  64 tn The redundant participle λέγοντες (legontes) has not been translated here.

[5:9]  65 tn Or “slaughtered”; traditionally, “slain.”

[5:9]  66 tn The preposition ἐν (en) is taken to indicate price here, like the Hebrew preposition ב (bet) does at times. BDAG 329 s.v. ἐν 5.b states, “The ἐν which takes the place of the gen. of price is also instrumental ἠγόρασας ἐν τῷ αἵματί σου Rv 5:9 (cp. 1 Ch 21:24 ἀγοράζω ἐν ἀργυρίῳ).”

[5:9]  67 tc The Greek text as it stands above (i.e., the reading τῷ θεῷ [tw qew] alone) is found in codex A. א 2050 2344 Ï sy add the term “us” (ἡμᾶς, Jhmas), either before or after τῷ θεῷ, as an attempt to clarify the object of “purchased” (ἠγόρασας, hgorasa"). A few mss (1 vgms) delete the reference to God altogether and simply replace it with “us” (ἡμᾶς). This too is an attempt to remove ambiguity in the phrase and provide an object for “purchased.” The shorter reading, supported by the best witness for Revelation, best accounts for the other readings.

[5:9]  68 tn The word “persons” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[5:9]  69 tn Grk “and language,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.
