Isaiah 48:18

Context

48:18 If only you had obeyed my 1  commandments,

prosperity would have flowed to you like a river, 2

deliverance would have come to you like the waves of the sea. 3

Isaiah 59:19

Context

59:19 In the west, people respect 4  the Lord’s reputation; 5

in the east they recognize his splendor. 6

For he comes like a rushing 7  stream

driven on by wind sent from the Lord. 8

Isaiah 66:12

Context

66:12 For this is what the Lord says:

“Look, I am ready to extend to her prosperity that will flow like a river,

the riches of nations will flow into her like a stream that floods its banks. 9

You will nurse from her breast 10  and be carried at her side;

you will play on her knees.

[48:18]  1 tn Heb “paid attention to” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV); TEV “had listened to.”

[48:18]  2 tn Heb “like a river your peace would have been.” שָׁלוֹם (shalom) probably refers here to the peace and prosperity which God promised in return for obedience to the covenant.

[48:18]  3 tn Heb “and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.” צְדָקָה (tsÿdaqah) probably refers here to divine deliverance from enemies. See v. 19.

[59:19]  4 tc Heb “fear.” A few medieval Hebrew mss read “see.”

[59:19]  5 tn Heb “and they fear from the west the name of the Lord.”

[59:19]  6 tn Heb “and from the rising of the sun his splendor.”

[59:19]  7 tn Heb “narrow”; NAB, NIV, NRSV “pent-up.”

[59:19]  8 tn Heb “the wind of the Lord drives it on.” The term רוּחַ (ruakh) could be translated “breath” here (see 30:28).

[66:12]  7 tn Heb “Look, I am ready to extend to her like a river prosperity [or “peace”], and like an overflowing stream, the riches of nations.”

[66:12]  8 tn The words “from her breast” are supplied in the translation for clarification (see v. 11).
