48:2 Indeed, they live in the holy city; ¹ 

they trust in ²  the God of Israel,

whose name is the Lord who commands armies.

Isaiah 62:12

62:12 They will be called, “The Holy People,

the Ones Protected ³  by the Lord.”

You will be called, “Sought After,

City Not Abandoned.”

35:8 A thoroughfare will be there –

it will be called the Way of Holiness. ⁹ 

The unclean will not travel on it;

it is reserved for those authorized to use it ¹⁰  –

fools ¹¹  will not stray into it.

Isaiah 52:1

52:1 Wake up! Wake up!

Clothe yourself with strength, O Zion!

Put on your beautiful clothes,

O Jerusalem, ¹²  holy city!

For uncircumcised and unclean pagans

will no longer invade you.

[48:2]  ¹ tn Heb “they call themselves [or “are called”] from the holy city.” The precise meaning of the statement is uncertain. The Niphal of קָרָא (qara’) is combined with the preposition מִן (min) only here. When the Qal of קָרָא is used with מִן, the preposition often indicates the place from which one is summoned (see 46:11). So one could translate, “from the holy city they are summoned,” meaning that they reside there.

[48:2]  ² tn Heb “lean on” (so NASB, NRSV); NAB, NIV “rely on.”

[62:12]  ³ tn Or “the redeemed of the Lord” (KJV, NAB).

[27:13]  ⁵ tn Heb “and it will be in that day.” The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

[27:13]  ⁶ tn Traditionally, “great” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NLT); CEV “loud.”

[35:8]  ⁸ tn The precise meaning of this line is uncertain. The text reads literally “and it is for them, the one who walks [on the] way.” In this context those authorized to use the Way of Holiness would be morally upright people who are the recipients of God’s deliverance, in contrast to the morally impure and foolish who are excluded from the new covenant community.

[35:8]  ⁹ tn In this context “fools” are those who are morally corrupt, not those with limited intellectual capacity.
