Isaiah 49:19
Context49:19 Yes, your land lies in ruins;
it is desolate and devastated. 1
But now you will be too small to hold your residents,
and those who devoured you will be far away.
Isaiah 54:14
Context54:14 You will be reestablished when I vindicate you. 2
You will not experience oppression; 3
indeed, you will not be afraid.
You will not be terrified, 4
for nothing frightening 5 will come near you.
Isaiah 59:12
Context59:12 For you are aware of our many rebellious deeds, 6
and our sins testify against us;
indeed, we are aware of our rebellious deeds;
we know our sins all too well. 7

[49:19] 1 tn Heb “Indeed your ruins and your desolate places, and the land of your destruction.” This statement is abruptly terminated in the Hebrew text and left incomplete.
[54:14] 2 tn Heb “in righteousness [or “vindication”] you will be established.” The precise meaning of צְדָקָה (tsÿdaqah) here is uncertain. It could mean “righteousness, justice,” indicating that the city will be a center for justice. But the context focuses on deliverance, suggesting that the term means “deliverance, vindication” here.
[54:14] 3 tn Heb “Be far from oppression!” The imperative is used here in a rhetorical manner to express certainty and assurance. See GKC 324 §110.c.
[54:14] 4 tn Heb “from terror.” The rhetorical command, “be far” is understood by ellipsis here. Note the preceding context.
[54:14] 5 tn Heb “it,” i.e., the “terror” just mentioned.
[59:12] 3 tn Heb “for many are our rebellious deeds before you.”
[59:12] 4 tn Heb “indeed [or “for”] our rebellious deeds (are) with us, and our sins, we know them.”
