Isaiah 5:2

5:2 He built a hedge around it, ¹  removed its stones,

and planted a vine.

He built a tower in the middle of it,

and constructed a winepress.

He waited for it to produce edible grapes,

but it produced sour ones instead. ² 

Isaiah 7:20

7:20 At that time ³  the sovereign master will use a razor hired from the banks of the Euphrates River, ⁴  the king of Assyria, to shave the head and the pubic hair; ⁵  it will also shave off the beard.

Isaiah 30:5

30:5 all will be put to shame ⁶ 

because of a nation that cannot help them,

who cannot give them aid or help,

but only shame and disgrace.”

Isaiah 40:24

[7:20]  ⁵ tn Heb “the hair of the feet.” The translation assumes that the word “feet” is used here as a euphemism for the genitals. See BDB 920 s.v. רֶגֶל.

[30:5]  ⁵ tn The present translation follows the marginal (Qere) reading of the Hebrew text; the consonantal text (Kethib) has “made to stink, decay.”

[31:2]  ⁷ sn This statement appears to have a sarcastic tone. The royal advisers who are advocating an alliance with Egypt think they are wise, but the Lord possesses wisdom as well and will thwart their efforts.

[31:2]  ⁸ tn Heb “and he does not turn aside [i.e., “retract”] his words”; NIV “does not take back his words.”
