Isaiah 5:7

Context

5:7 Indeed 1  Israel 2  is the vineyard of the Lord who commands armies,

the people 3  of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight.

He waited for justice, but look what he got – disobedience! 4 

He waited for fairness, but look what he got – cries for help! 5

64:6 We are all like one who is unclean,

all our so-called righteous acts are like a menstrual rag in your sight. 46 

We all wither like a leaf;

[5:7]  1 tn Or “For” (KJV, ASV, NASB, NRSV).

[5:7]  2 tn Heb “the house of Israel” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[5:7]  3 tn Heb “men,” but in a generic sense.

[5:7]  4 tn Heb “but, look, disobedience.” The precise meaning of מִשְׂפָּח (mishpakh), which occurs only here in the OT, is uncertain. Some have suggested a meaning “bloodshed.” The term is obviously chosen for its wordplay value; it sounds very much like מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat, “justice”). The sound play draws attention to the point being made; the people have not met the Lord’s expectations.

[5:7]  5 tn Heb “but, look, a cry for help.” The verb (“he waited”) does double duty in the parallelism. צְעָקָה (tsaqah) refers to the cries for help made by the oppressed. It sounds very much like צְדָקָה (tsÿdaqah, “fairness”). The sound play draws attention to the point being made; the people have not met the Lord’s expectations.

[10:22]  6 tn Heb “are like.”

[10:22]  7 sn The twofold appearance of the statement “a remnant will come back” (שְׁאָר יָשׁוּב, shear yashuv) in vv. 21-22 echoes and probably plays off the name of Isaiah’s son Shear-jashub (see 7:3). In its original context the name was meant to encourage Ahaz (see the note at 7:3), but here it has taken on new dimensions. In light of Ahaz’s failure and the judgment it brings down on the land, the name Shear-jashub now foreshadows the destiny of the nation. According to vv. 21-22, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that a remnant of God’s people will return; the bad news is that only a remnant will be preserved and come back. Like the name Immanuel, this name foreshadows both judgment (see the notes at 7:25 and 8:8) and ultimate restoration (see the note at 8:10).

[10:22]  8 tn Or “predetermined”; cf. ASV, NASB “is determined”; TEV “is in store.”

[10:22]  9 tn צְדָקָה (tsÿdaqah) often means “righteousness,” but here it refers to God’s just judgment.

[10:22]  10 tn Or “is about to overflow.”

[45:8]  11 tn Heb “let the clouds drip with”; KJV “let the skies pour down.”
