Isaiah 50:10

Context

50:10 Who among you fears the Lord?

Who obeys 1  his servant?

Whoever walks in deep darkness, 2 

without light,

should trust in the name of the Lord

and rely on his God.

9:28 so also, after Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many, 8  to those who eagerly await him he will appear a second time, not to bear sin 9  but to bring salvation. 10

[50:10]  1 tn Heb “[who] listens to the voice of his servant?” The interrogative is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

[50:10]  2 tn The plural indicates degree. Darkness may refer to exile and/or moral evil.

[2:38]  3 tn Grk “at that very hour.”

[2:38]  4 tn Grk “And coming up.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style. The participle ἐπιστᾶσα (epistasa) has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

[2:38]  5 tn The imperfect ἐλάλει (elalei) here looks at a process of declaration, not a single moment. She clearly was led by God to address men and women about the hope Jesus was. The testimony of Luke 1—2 to Jesus has involved all types of people.

[2:38]  6 tn Grk “him”; the referent (the child) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[2:38]  7 tc A few mss (1216 pc) read ᾿Ισραήλ (Israhl, “Israel”) or ἐν τῷ ᾿Ισραήλ (en tw Israhl, “in Israel”), but this reading does not have enough ms support to be considered authentic. More substantial is the reading ἐν ᾿Ιερουσαλήμ (en Ierousalhm, “in Jerusalem”; found in A D L Θ Ψ 0130 Ë13 33 Ï), though the preposition was almost surely added to clarify (and perhaps alter) the meaning of the original. The simple ᾿Ιερουσαλήμ, without preposition, is found in א B W Ξ 1 565* lat co.

[9:28]  8 sn An allusion to Isa 53:12.

[9:28]  9 tn Grk “without sin,” but in context this does not refer to Christ’s sinlessness (as in Heb 4:15) but to the fact that sin is already dealt with by his first coming.

[9:28]  10 tn Grk “for salvation.” This may be construed with the verb “await” (those who wait for him to bring them salvation), but the connection with “appear” (as in the translation) is more likely.
