Isaiah 50:10

50:10 Who among you fears the Lord?

Who obeys ¹  his servant?

Whoever walks in deep darkness, ² 

without light,

should trust in the name of the Lord

and rely on his God.

Isaiah 66:4

66:4 So I will choose severe punishment ³  for them;

I will bring on them what they dread,

because I called, and no one responded,

I spoke and they did not listen.

They did evil before me; ⁴ 

they chose to do what displeases me.”

Isaiah 8:12

8:12 “Do not say, ‘Conspiracy,’ every time these people say the word. ⁵ 

Don’t be afraid of what scares them; don’t be terrified.

[50:10]  ¹ tn Heb “[who] listens to the voice of his servant?” The interrogative is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

[50:10]  ² tn The plural indicates degree. Darkness may refer to exile and/or moral evil.

[66:4]  ³ tn The precise meaning of the noun is uncertain. It occurs only here and in 3:4 (but see the note there). It appears to be derived from the verbal root עָלַל (’alal), which can carry the nuance “deal severely.”

[66:4]  ⁴ tn Heb “that which is evil in my eyes.”

[8:12]  ⁵ tn Heb “Do not say, ‘Conspiracy,’ with respect to all which these people say, ‘Conspiracy.’” The verb translated “do not say” is second masculine plural, indicating that this exhortation is directed to Isaiah and other followers of the Lord (see v. 16).
