53:4 But he lifted up our illnesses,

he carried our pain; ¹ 

even though we thought he was being punished,

attacked by God, and afflicted for something he had done. ²

58:10 You must ³  actively help the hungry

and feed the oppressed. ⁴ 

Then your light will dispel the darkness, ⁵

60:14 The children of your oppressors will come bowing to you;

all who treated you with disrespect will bow down at your feet.

They will call you, ‘The City of the Lord,

Zion of the Holy One of Israel.’ ¹³

Do I want a day when people merely humble themselves, ¹⁵ 

bowing their heads like a reed

Is this really what you call a fast,

a day that is pleasing to the Lord?

Isaiah 31:4

The Lord Will Defend Zion

31:4 Indeed, this is what the Lord says to me:

“The Lord will be like a growling lion,

like a young lion growling over its prey. ¹⁷ 

Though a whole group of shepherds gathers against it,

it is not afraid of their shouts

or intimidated by their yelling. ¹⁸ 

In this same way the Lord who commands armies will descend

to do battle on Mount Zion and on its hill. ¹⁹

Sheep were slaughtered for food as well as for sacrificial rituals, and טֶבַח (tevakh) need not refer to sacrificial slaughter (see Gen 43:16; Prov 7:22; 9:2; Jer 50:27; note also the use of the related verb in Exod 21:37; Deut 28:31; 1 Sam 25:11).
