Isaiah 58:6

Context

58:6 No, this is the kind of fast I want. 1

I want you 2  to remove the sinful chains,

to tear away the ropes of the burdensome yoke,

to set free the oppressed, 3

and to break every burdensome yoke.

Jeremiah 34:14-15

Context
34:14 “Every seven years each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you for six years, you shall set them free.” 4  But your ancestors did not obey me or pay any attention to me. 34:15 Recently, however, you yourselves 5  showed a change of heart and did what is pleasing to me. You granted your fellow countrymen their freedom and you made a covenant to that effect in my presence in the house that I have claimed for my own. 6

Hebrews 13:1-3

Context
Final Exhortations

13:1 Brotherly love must continue. 13:2 Do not neglect hospitality, because through it some have entertained angels without knowing it. 7  13:3 Remember those in prison as though you were in prison with them, 8  and those ill-treated as though you too felt their torment. 9

[58:6]  1 tn Heb “Is this not a fast I choose?” “No” is supplied in the translation for clarification.

[58:6]  2 tn The words “I want you” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[58:6]  3 tn Heb “crushed.”

[34:14]  4 sn Compare Deut 15:12-18 for the complete statement of this law. Here only the first part of it is cited.

[34:15]  5 tn The presence of the independent pronoun in the Hebrew text is intended to contrast their actions with those of their ancestors.

[34:15]  6 sn This refers to the temple. See Jer 7:10, 11, 14, 30 and see the translator’s note on 7:10 and the study note on 10:25 for the explanation of the idiom involved here.

[13:2]  7 sn This is a vague allusion to people described in scripture and extra-biblical literature and may include Abraham and Sarah (Gen 18:2-15), Lot (Gen 19:1-14), Gideon (Judg 6:11-18), Manoah (Judg 13:3-22), and possibly Tobit (Tob 12:1-20).

[13:3]  8 tn Grk “as being imprisoned together.”

[13:3]  9 tn Or “since you too are vulnerable”; Grk “you also being in the body.”
