Together they will perish. 2

[31:3]  1 tn Heb “will extend”; KJV, ASV, NASB, NCV “stretch out.”

[31:3]  2 tn Heb “together all of them will come to an end.”

[31:8]  1 tn Heb “Assyria will fall by a sword, not of a man.”

[31:8]  2 tn Heb “and a sword not of humankind will devour him.”

[31:8]  3 tn Heb “he will flee for himself from before a sword.”

[37:19]  1 tn Heb “and they put their gods in the fire.”

[37:19]  2 tn Heb “so they destroyed them” (NASB similar).

[38:11]  1 tn The Hebrew text has יָהּ יָהּ (yah yah, the abbreviated form of יְהוָה [yÿhvah] repeated), but this is probably a corruption of יְהוָה.

[38:11]  2 tc The Hebrew text has חָדֶל (khadel), which appears to be derived from a verbal root meaning “to cease, refrain.” But the form has probably suffered an error of transmission; the original form (attested in a few medieval Hebrew mss) was likely חֶלֶד (kheled, “world”).

[44:13]  1 tn Heb “stretches out a line” (ASV similar); NIV “measures with a line.”

[44:13]  2 tn Heb “he makes an outline with the [?].” The noun שֶׂרֶד (shered) occurs only here; it apparently refers to some type of tool or marker. Cf. KJV “with a line”; ASV “with a pencil”; NAB, NRSV “with a stylus”; NASB “with red chalk”; NIV “with a marker.”

[44:13]  3 tn Heb “works” (so NASB) or “fashions” (so NRSV); NIV “he roughs it out.”

[44:13]  4 tn Heb “he makes it like the pattern of a man”; NAB “like a man in appearance.”

[44:13]  5 tn Heb “like the glory of man to sit [in] a house”; NIV “that it may dwell in a shrine.”

[51:12]  1 tc The plural suffix should probably be emended to the second masculine singular (which is used in v. 13). The final mem (ם) is probably dittographic; note the mem at the beginning of the next word.

[51:12]  2 tn Heb “Who are you that you are afraid of man who dies, and of the son of man who [as] grass is given up?” The feminine singular forms should probably be emended to the masculine singular (see v. 13). They have probably been influenced by the construction אַתְּ־הִיא (’at-hi’) in vv. 9-10.

[56:2]  1 tn Heb “blessed is the man who does this.”

[56:2]  2 tn Heb “the son of mankind who takes hold of it.”

[56:2]  3 tn Heb and who keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
