Isaiah 60:21

Context

60:21 All of your people will be godly; 1

they will possess the land permanently.

I will plant them like a shoot;

they will be the product of my labor,

through whom I reveal my splendor. 2

Psalms 92:12-15

Context

92:12 The godly 3  grow like a palm tree;

they grow high like a cedar in Lebanon. 4

92:13 Planted in the Lord’s house,

they grow in the courts of our God.

92:14 They bear fruit even when they are old;

they are filled with vitality and have many leaves. 5

92:15 So they proclaim that the Lord, my protector,

is just and never unfair. 6

Jeremiah 17:7-8

Context

17:7 My blessing is on those people who trust in me,

who put their confidence in me. 7

17:8 They will be like a tree planted near a stream

whose roots spread out toward the water.

It has nothing to fear when the heat comes.

Its leaves are always green.

It has no need to be concerned in a year of drought.

It does not stop bearing fruit.

Matthew 7:17-19

Context
7:17 In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad 8  tree bears bad fruit. 7:18 A good tree is not able to bear bad fruit, nor a bad tree to bear good fruit. 7:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

[60:21]  1 tn Or “righteous” (NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); NAB “just.”

[60:21]  2 tn Heb “a shoot of his planting, the work of my hands, to reveal splendor.”

[92:12]  3 tn The singular is used in a representative sense, with the typical godly person being in view.

[92:12]  4 sn The cedars of the Lebanon forest were well-known in ancient Israel for their immense size.

[92:14]  5 tn Heb “they are juicy and fresh.”

[92:15]  6 tn Heb “so that [they] proclaim that upright [is] the Lord, my rocky summit, and there is no injustice in him.”

[17:7]  7 tn Heb “Blessed is the person who trusts in the Lord, and whose confidence is in the Lord.” However, because this is a statement of the Lord and the translation chooses to show that the blessing comes from him, the first person is substituted for the divine name.

[7:17]  8 tn Grk “rotten.” The word σαπρός, modifying “tree” in both v. 17 and 18, can also mean “diseased” (L&N 65.28).
