Ephesians 4:30
Context4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
[63:10] 1 tn Or “grieved, hurt the feelings of.”
[63:10] 2 sn The phrase “holy Spirit” occurs in the OT only here (in v. 11 as well) and in Ps 51:11 (51:13 HT), where it is associated with the divine presence.
[12:31] 3 tn Grk “every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men.”
[12:32] 4 tn Grk “it will be forgiven him.”
[12:32] 5 tn Grk “it will not be forgiven him.”
[12:10] 6 sn Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit probably refers to a total rejection of the testimony that the Spirit gives to Jesus and the plan of God. This is not so much a sin of the moment as of one’s entire life, an obstinate rejection of God’s message and testimony. Cf. Matt 12:31-32 and Mark 3:28-30.
[12:10] 7 tn Grk “it will not be forgiven the person who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit.”
[7:51] 8 sn Traditionally, “stiff-necked people.” Now the critique begins in earnest.
[7:51] 9 tn The term ἀπερίτμητοι (aperitmhtoi, “uncircumcised”) is a NT hapax legomenon (occurs only once). See BDAG 101-2 s.v. ἀπερίτμητος and Isa 52:1.
[7:51] 10 tn Or “You stubborn and obstinate people!” (The phrase “uncircumcised hearts and ears” is another figure for stubbornness.)
