Isaiah 8:21

Context
8:21 They will pass through the land 1  destitute and starving. Their hunger will make them angry, 2  and they will curse their king and their God 3  as they look upward.

15:2 They went up to the temple, 4 

the people of Dibon went up to the high places to lament. 5 

Because of what happened to Nebo and Medeba, 6  Moab wails.

Every head is shaved bare,

[8:21]  1 tn Heb “he will pass through it.” The subject of the collective singular verb is the nation. (See the preceding note.) The immediately preceding context supplies no antecedent for “it” (a third feminine singular suffix in the Hebrew text); the suffix may refer to the land, which would be a reasonable referent with a verb of motion. Note also that אֶרֶץ (’erets, “land”) does appear at the beginning of the next verse.

[8:21]  2 tn The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

[8:21]  3 tn Or “gods” (NAB, NRSV, CEV).

[15:2]  4 tn Heb “house.”

[15:2]  5 tn Heb “even Dibon [to] the high places to weep.” The verb “went up” does double duty in the parallel structure.

[17:10]  9 tn Heb “a vine, a strange one.” The substantival adjective זָר (zar) functions here as an appositional genitive. It could refer to a cultic plant of some type, associated with a pagan rite. But it is more likely that it refers to an exotic, or imported, type of vine, one that is foreign (i.e., “strange”) to Israel.

[24:13]  10 tn Heb “in the midst of” (so KJV, ASV, NASB).

[24:13]  11 sn The judgment will severely reduce the earth’s population. See v. 6.

[37:26]  13 tn Having quoted the Assyrian king’s arrogant words in vv. 23-24, the Lord now speaks to the king.

[37:26]  14 tn Heb “Have you not heard?” The rhetorical question expresses the Lord’s amazement that anyone might be ignorant of what he is about to say.

[37:26]  15 tn Heb “formed” (so KJV, ASV).

[37:26]  16 tn Heb “and it is to cause to crash into heaps of ruins fortified cities.” The subject of the third feminine singular verb תְהִי (tÿhi) is the implied plan, referred to in the preceding lines with third feminine singular pronominal suffixes.

[43:19]  16 tn Heb “sprouts up”; NASB “will spring forth.”

[43:19]  17 tn Or “know” (KJV, ASV); NASB “be aware of”; NAB, NIV, NRSV “perceive.”

[43:19]  18 tn The Hebrew texts has “streams,” probably under the influence of v. 20. The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa has נתיבות (“paths”).
