Isaiah 8:7

8:7 So look, the sovereign master ¹  is bringing up against them the turbulent and mighty waters of the Euphrates River ²  – the king of Assyria and all his majestic power. It will reach flood stage and overflow its banks. ³ 

Isaiah 20:6

20:6 At that time ⁴  those who live on this coast ⁵  will say, ‘Look what has happened to our source of hope to whom we fled for help, expecting to be rescued from the king of Assyria! How can we escape now?’”

Isaiah 26:21

26:21 For look, the Lord is coming out of the place where he lives, ⁶ 

to punish the sin of those who live on the earth.

The earth will display the blood shed on it;

Isaiah 36:6

Isaiah 39:6

39:6 ‘Look, a time is coming when everything in your palace and the things your ancestors ⁸  have accumulated to this day will be carried away to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the Lord.

Isaiah 40:9

40:9 Go up on a high mountain, O herald Zion!

Shout out loudly, O herald Jerusalem! ⁹ 

Shout, don’t be afraid!

Say to the towns of Judah,

“Here is your God!”

Isaiah 49:22

49:22 This is what the sovereign Lord says:

“Look I will raise my hand to the nations;

I will raise my signal flag to the peoples.

They will bring your sons in their arms

and carry your daughters on their shoulders.

Isaiah 51:22

51:22 This is what your sovereign master, ¹⁰  the Lord your God, says:

“Look, I have removed from your hand

the cup of intoxicating wine, ¹¹ 

the goblet full of my anger. ¹² 

You will no longer have to drink it.

[8:7]  ¹ tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

[8:7]  ² tn Heb “the mighty and abundant waters of the river.” The referent of “the river” here, the Euphrates River, has been specified in the translation for clarity. As the immediately following words indicate, these waters symbolize the Assyrian king and his armies which will, as it were, inundate the land.

[8:7]  ³ tn Heb “it will go up over all its stream beds and go over all its banks.”

[20:6]  ⁴ tn Heb “in that day” (so KJV).

[20:6]  ⁵ sn This probably refers to the coastal region of Philistia (cf. TEV).

[26:21]  ⁷ tn Heb “out of his place” (so KJV, ASV).

[26:21]  ⁸ sn This implies that rampant bloodshed is one of the reasons for divine judgment. See the note at 24:5.

[39:6]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “fathers” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV).

[40:9]  ¹³ tn The second feminine singular imperatives are addressed to personified Zion/Jerusalem, who is here told to ascend a high hill and proclaim the good news of the Lord’s return to the other towns of Judah. Isa 41:27 and 52:7 speak of a herald sent to Zion, but the masculine singular form מְבַשֵּׂר (mÿvaser) is used in these verses, in contrast to the feminine singular form מְבַשֶּׂרֶת (mÿvaseret) employed in 40:9, where Zion is addressed as a herald.
