Judges 1:17

1:17 The men of Judah went with their brothers the men of Simeon ¹  and defeated the Canaanites living in Zephath. They wiped out Zephath. ²  So people now call the city Hormah. ³

18:12 They went up and camped in Kiriath Jearim in Judah. (To this day that place is called Camp of Dan. ¹²  It is west ¹³  of Kiriath Jearim.)

[1:17]  ² tn Heb “it”; the referent (the city of Zephath) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[1:17]  ³ sn The name Hormah (חָרְמָה, khormah) sounds like the Hebrew verb translated “wipe out” (חָרַם, kharam).

[3:27]  ⁴ tn Heb “When he arrived.”

[3:27]  ⁵ tn That is, “mustered an army.”

[3:27]  ⁶ tn Heb “now he was before them.”

[9:29]  ⁷ tn Heb “people.”

[9:29]  ⁸ tn Heb “in my hand.”

[9:29]  ⁹ tn Heb “said to Abimelech.” On the other hand, the preposition ל (lamed) prefixed to the proper name may be vocative (see R. G. Boling, Judges [AB], 178). If so, one could translate, “He boasted, ‘Abimelech…’”

[9:29]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “Make numerous.”

[9:29]  ¹¹ tn The words “for battle” are interpretive.

[18:12]  ¹⁰ tn Or “Mahaneh Dan”; the Hebrew term “Mahaneh” means “camp [of].” Many English versions retain the transliterated Hebrew expression, but cf. CEV “Dan’s Camp.”
