[16:28]  1 tn The Hebrew has אֲדֹנָי יֱהֹוִה (’adonay yehovih, “Lord Yahweh”).

[16:28]  2 tn Heb “so I can get revenge with one act of vengeance.”

[16:29]  3 tn Heb “the pillars upon which the house was founded.”

[16:30]  4 tn Heb “he stretched out with strength.”

[16:30]  5 tn Heb “And the ones whom he killed in his death were many more than he killed in his life.”

[16:2]  6 tc Heb “To the Gazites, saying.” A verb is missing from the MT; some ancient Greek witnesses add “it was reported.”

[16:2]  7 tn Heb “And they surrounded.” The rest of the verse suggests that “the town” is the object, not “the house.” Though the Gazites knew Samson was in the town, apparently they did not know exactly where he had gone. Otherwise, they would could have just gone into or surrounded the house and would not have needed to post guards at the city gate.

[16:2]  8 tn Heb “and they lay in wait for him all night in the city gate.”

[16:2]  9 tn Heb “were silent.”

[16:2]  10 tn Heb “saying.”

[16:2]  11 tn The words “He will not leave” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[16:2]  12 tn Heb “until the light of the morning.”

[18:19]  13 tn See the note on the word “adviser” in 17:10.

[18:19]  14 tn Heb “Is it better for you to be priest for the house of one man or for you to be priest for a tribe, for a clan in Israel?”

[18:31]  15 tn Heb “they set up for themselves.”

[18:31]  16 tn Heb “the carved image that Micah had made.”

[18:31]  17 tn Heb “the house of God.”

[19:30]  18 tn The words “the sight” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[19:30]  19 tn Heb “from the day.”

[19:30]  20 tc Codex Alexandrinus (A) of the (original) LXX has the following additional words: “And he instructed the men whom he sent out, ‘Thus you will say to every male Israelite: “There has never been anything like this from the day the Israelites left Egypt till the present day.”’”

[20:24]  21 tn Grk “soul.”

[20:24]  22 tn Or “I do not consider my life worth a single word.” According to BDAG 599 s.v. λόγος 1.a.α, “In the textually uncertain pass. Ac 20:24 the text as it stands in N., οὐδενὸς λόγου (v.l. λόγον) ποιοῦμαι τὴν ψυχὴν τιμίαν, may well mean: I do not consider my life worth a single word (cp. λόγου ἄξιον [ἄξιος 1a] and our ‘worth mention’).”

[20:24]  23 tn BDAG 1106 s.v. ὡς 9 describes this use as “a final particle, expressing intention/purpose, with a view to, in order to.”

[20:24]  24 tn Grk “course.” See L&N 42.26, “(a figurative extension of meaning of δρόμος ‘race’) a task or function involving continuity, serious, effort, and possibly obligation – ‘task, mission’…Ac 20:24.” On this Pauline theme see also Phil 1:19-26; Col 1:24; 2 Tim 4:6-7.

[20:24]  25 tn Or “to the gospel.”

[21:13]  26 tn The term translated “breaking” as used by Josephus (Ant. 10.10.4 [10.207]) means to break something into pieces, but in its only NT use (it is a hapax legomenon) it is used figuratively (BDAG 972 s.v. συνθρύπτω).

[21:13]  27 tn L&N 18.13 has “to tie objects together – ‘to tie, to tie together, to tie up.’” The verb δέω (dew) is sometimes figurative for imprisonment (L&N 37.114), but it is preferable to translate it literally here in light of v. 11 where Agabus tied himself up with Paul’s belt.

[2:30]  28 tn Grk “make up for your lack of service to me.”
