2:23 This is why ¹  the Lord permitted these nations to remain and did not conquer them immediately; ²  he did not hand them over to Joshua.

Gideon Meets Some Visitors

6:11 The Lord’s angelic messenger ⁴  came and sat down under the oak tree in Ophrah owned by Joash the Abiezrite. He arrived while Joash’s son Gideon ⁵  was threshing ⁶  wheat in a winepress ⁷  so he could hide it from the Midianites. ⁸ 

Judges 6:19

6:19 Gideon went and prepared a young goat, ⁹  along with unleavened bread made from an ephah of flour. He put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot. He brought the food ¹⁰  to him under the oak tree and presented it to him.

Judges 9:3

9:3 His mother’s relatives ¹¹  spoke on his behalf to ¹²  all the leaders of Shechem and reported his proposal. ¹³  The leaders were drawn to Abimelech; ¹⁴  they said, “He is our close relative.” ¹⁵ 

Judges 18:14

18:14 The five men who had gone to spy out the land of Laish ¹⁶  said to their kinsmen, ¹⁷  “Do you realize that inside these houses are an ephod, some personal idols, a carved image, and a metal image? Decide now what you want to do.”

[6:11]  ⁶ tn Heb “Now Gideon his son…” The Hebrew circumstantial clause (note the pattern vav [ו] + subject + predicate) breaks the narrative sequence and indicates that the angel’s arrival coincided with Gideon’s threshing.

[6:11]  ⁷ tn Heb “beating out.”

[6:11]  ⁸ sn Threshing wheat in a winepress. One would normally thresh wheat at the threshing floor outside the city. Animals and a threshing sledge would be employed.
