Context3:7 The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight. 1 They forgot the Lord their God and worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs. 2

Context6:32 That very day Gideon’s father named him Jerub-Baal, 3 because he had said, “Let Baal fight with him, for it was his altar that was pulled down.”
Judges 8:33
Context8:33 After Gideon died, the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They made Baal-Berith 4 their god.
Judges 10:10
Context10:10 The Israelites cried out for help to the Lord: “We have sinned against you. We abandoned our God and worshiped 5 the Baals.”

[3:7] 2 sn The Asherahs were local manifestations of the Canaanite goddess Asherah.
[6:32] 3 tn Heb “He called him on that day Jerub-Baal.” The name means, at least by popular etymology, “Let Baal fight!”
[8:33] 5 sn Baal-Berith was a local manifestation of the Canaanite storm god. The name means, ironically, “Baal of the covenant.” Israel’s covenant allegiance had indeed shifted.
