Jeremiah 14:14

Context

14:14 Then the Lord said to me, “Those prophets are prophesying lies while claiming my authority! 1  I did not send them. I did not commission them. 2  I did not speak to them. They are prophesying to these people false visions, worthless predictions, 3  and the delusions of their own mind.

Jeremiah 38:4

Context
38:4 So these officials said to the king, “This man must be put to death. For he is demoralizing 4  the soldiers who are left in the city as well as all the other people there by these things he is saying. 5  This 6  man is not seeking to help these people but is trying to harm them.” 7

Jeremiah 51:58

Context

51:58 This is what the Lord who rules over all 8  says,

“Babylon’s thick wall 9  will be completely demolished. 10

Her high gates will be set on fire.

The peoples strive for what does not satisfy. 11

The nations grow weary trying to get what will be destroyed.” 12

Jeremiah 52:15

Context
52:15 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard, took into exile some of the poor, 13  the rest of the people who remained in the city, those who had deserted to him, and the rest of the craftsmen.

[14:14]  1 tn Heb “Falsehood those prophets are prophesying in my name.” In the OT, the “name” reflected the person’s character (cf. Gen 27:36; 1 Sam 25:25) or his reputation (Gen 11:4; 2 Sam 8:13). To speak in someone’s name was to act as his representative or carry his authority (1 Sam 25:9; 1 Kgs 21:8).

[14:14]  2 tn Heb “I did not command them.” Compare 1 Chr 22:12 for usage.

[14:14]  3 tn Heb “divination and worthlessness.” The noun “worthlessness” stands as a qualifying “of” phrase (= to an adjective; an attributive genitive in Hebrew) after a noun in Zech 11:17; Job 13:4. This is an example of hendiadys where two nouns are joined by “and” with one serving as the qualifier of the other.

[38:4]  4 tn Heb “weakening the hands of.” For this idiom see BDB 951 s.v. רָפָה Pi. and compare the usage in Isa 13:7; Ezek 21:7 (21:12 HT).

[38:4]  5 tn Heb “by saying these things.”

[38:4]  6 tn The Hebrew particle כִּי (ki) has not been rendered here because it is introducing a parallel causal clause to the preceding one. To render “For” might be misunderstood as a grounds for the preceding statement. To render “And” or “Moreover” sounds a little odd here. If it must be represented, “Moreover” is perhaps the best rendering.

[38:4]  7 tn Or “is not looking out for these people’s best interests but is really trying to do them harm”; Heb “is not seeking the welfare [or “well-being”; Hebrew shalom] of this people but [their] harm [more literally, evil].”

[51:58]  7 sn See the note at Jer 2:19.

[51:58]  8 tn The text has the plural “walls,” but many Hebrew mss read the singular “wall,” which is also supported by the ancient Greek version. The modifying adjective “thick” is singular as well.

[51:58]  9 tn The infinitive absolute emphasizes the following finite verb. Another option is to translate, “will certainly be demolished.”

[51:58]  10 tn Heb “for what is empty.”

[51:58]  11 tn Heb “and the nations for fire, and they grow weary.”

[52:15]  10 tn Heb “poor of the people.”
