Jeremiah 14:19

Context

14:19 Then I said,

Lord, 1  have you completely rejected the nation of Judah?

Do you despise 2  the city of Zion?

Why have you struck us with such force

that we are beyond recovery? 3 

We hope for peace, but nothing good has come of it.

We hope for a time of relief from our troubles, but experience terror. 4

38:4 So these officials said to the king, “This man must be put to death. For he is demoralizing 5  the soldiers who are left in the city as well as all the other people there by these things he is saying. 6  This 7  man is not seeking to help these people but is trying to harm them.” 8

[14:19]  1 tn The words, “Then I said, ‘Lord” are not in the Hebrew text. It is obvious from the context that the Lord is addressee. The question of the identity of the speaker is the same as that raised in vv. 7-9 and the arguments set forth there are applicable here as well. Jeremiah is here identifying with the people and doing what they refuse to do, i.e., confess their sins and express their trust in him.

[14:19]  2 tn Heb “does your soul despise.” Here as in many places the word “soul” stands as part for whole for the person himself emphasizing emotional and volitional aspects of the person. However, in contemporary English one does not regularly speak of the “soul” in contexts such as this but of the person.

[14:19]  3 tn Heb “Why have you struck us and there is no healing for us.” The statement involves poetic exaggeration (hyperbole) for rhetorical effect.

[14:19]  4 tn Heb “[We hope] for a time of healing but behold terror.”

[38:4]  5 tn Heb “weakening the hands of.” For this idiom see BDB 951 s.v. רָפָה Pi. and compare the usage in Isa 13:7; Ezek 21:7 (21:12 HT).

[38:4]  6 tn Heb “by saying these things.”

[38:4]  7 tn The Hebrew particle כִּי (ki) has not been rendered here because it is introducing a parallel causal clause to the preceding one. To render “For” might be misunderstood as a grounds for the preceding statement. To render “And” or “Moreover” sounds a little odd here. If it must be represented, “Moreover” is perhaps the best rendering.

[38:4]  8 tn Or “is not looking out for these people’s best interests but is really trying to do them harm”; Heb “is not seeking the welfare [or “well-being”; Hebrew shalom] of this people but [their] harm [more literally, evil].”
