Jeremiah 25:12

Context

25:12 “‘But when the seventy years are over, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation 1  for their sins. I will make the land of Babylon 2  an everlasting ruin. 3  I, the Lord, affirm it! 4 

Jeremiah 25:33

Context

25:33 Those who have been killed by the Lord at that time

will be scattered from one end of the earth to the other.

They will not be mourned over, gathered up, or buried. 5 

Their dead bodies will lie scattered over the ground like manure.

Jeremiah 39:10

Context
39:10 But he 6  left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing. He gave them fields and vineyards at that time.

Jeremiah 39:16

Context
39:16 “Go 7  and tell Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, ‘The Lord God of Israel who rules over all says, “I will carry out against this city what I promised. It will mean disaster and not good fortune for it. 8  When that disaster happens, you will be there to see it. 9 

Jeremiah 46:10

Context

46:10 But that day belongs to the Lord God who rules over all. 10 

It is the day when he will pay back his enemies. 11 

His sword will devour them until its appetite is satisfied!

It will drink their blood until it is full! 12 

For the Lord God who rules over all 13  will offer them up as a sacrifice

in the land of the north by the Euphrates River.

[25:12]  1 tn Heb “that nation.”

[25:12]  2 tn Heb “the land of the Chaldeans.” See the study note on 21:4 for the use of the term “Chaldeans.”

[25:12]  3 tn Heb “I will visit upon the king of Babylon and upon that nation, oracle of the Lord, their iniquity even upon the land of the Chaldeans and I will make it everlasting ruins.” The sentence has been restructured to avoid ambiguity and to conform the style more to contemporary English.

[25:12]  4 tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

[25:33]  5 sn The intent here is to emphasize the large quantity of those who are killed – there will be too many to insure proper mourning rites and proper burial.

[39:10]  9 tn Heb “Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard.” However, the subject is clear from the preceding and contemporary English style would normally avoid repeating the proper name and title.

[39:16]  13 sn Even though Jeremiah was confined to the courtyard of the guardhouse, he was still free to entertain visitors (32:2, 8). Moreover, Ebed-Melech was an official attached to the royal court and would have had access to the courtyard of the guardhouse (38:7, 13). Jeremiah would not have had to leave the courtyard of the guardhouse to “go and tell” him something.

[39:16]  14 tn Heb “Behold, I will bring to pass my words against this city for evil/disaster and not for good/good fortune.” For the form of the verb מֵבִי ([mevi] Kethib, מֵבִיא [mevi’] Qere) see GKC 206-7 §74.k, where the same form is noted for the Kethib in 2 Sam 5:2; 1 Kgs 21:21; Jer 19:15 all of which occur before a word beginning with א. For the nuance “carry out” (or “bring to pass”) see BDB 99 s.v. בּוֹא Hiph.2.b.

[39:16]  15 tn Heb “And they [= my words for disaster] will come to pass [= happen] before you on that day [i.e., the day that I bring them to pass/carry them out].”

[46:10]  17 tn Heb “the Lord Yahweh of armies.” See the study note at 2:19 for the translation and significance of this title for God.

[46:10]  18 sn Most commentators think that this is a reference to the Lord exacting vengeance on Pharaoh Necho for killing Josiah, carrying Jehoahaz off into captivity, and exacting heavy tribute on Judah in 609 b.c. (2 Kgs 23:29, 33-35).

[46:10]  19 tn Or more paraphrastically, “he will kill them/ until he has exacted full vengeance”; Heb “The sword will eat and be sated; it will drink its fill of their blood.”
