Jeremiah 3:17
Context3:17 At that time the city of Jerusalem 1 will be called the Lord’s throne. All nations will gather there in Jerusalem to honor the Lord’s name. 2 They will no longer follow the stubborn inclinations of their own evil hearts. 3
Jeremiah 6:16-17
Context6:16 The Lord said to his people: 4
“You are standing at the crossroads. So consider your path. 5
Ask where the old, reliable paths 6 are.
Ask where the path is that leads to blessing 7 and follow it.
If you do, you will find rest for your souls.”
But they said, “We will not follow it!”
“I appointed prophets as watchmen to warn you, 9 saying:
‘Pay attention to the warning sound of the trumpet!’” 10
But they said, “We will not pay attention!”
Jeremiah 7:24
Context7:24 But they did not listen to me or pay any attention to me. They followed the stubborn inclinations of their own wicked hearts. They acted worse and worse instead of better. 11
Jeremiah 7:26
Context7:26 But your ancestors 12 did not listen to me nor pay attention to me. They became obstinate 13 and were more wicked than even their own forefathers.’”
Jeremiah 9:13-14
Context9:13 The Lord answered, “This has happened because these people have rejected my laws which I gave them. They have not obeyed me or followed those laws. 14 9:14 Instead they have followed the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts. They have paid allegiance to 15 the gods called Baal, 16 as their fathers 17 taught them to do.
Jeremiah 35:15
Context35:15 I sent all my servants the prophets to warn you over and over again. They said, “Every one of you, stop doing the evil things you have been doing and do what is right. 18 Do not pay allegiance to other gods 19 and worship them. Then you can continue to live in this land that I gave to you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay any attention or listen to me.
Jeremiah 44:17
Context44:17 Instead we will do everything we vowed we would do. 20 We will sacrifice and pour out drink offerings to the goddess called the Queen of Heaven 21 just as we and our ancestors, our kings, and our leaders previously did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, were well-off, and had no troubles. 22
Nehemiah 9:16-17
Context9:16 “But they – our ancestors 23 – behaved presumptuously; they rebelled 24 and did not obey your commandments. 9:17 They refused to obey and did not recall your miracles that you had performed among them. Instead, they rebelled and appointed a leader to return to their bondage in Egypt. 25 But you are a God of forgiveness, merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and unfailing in your loyal love. 26 You did not abandon them,
Nehemiah 9:26
Context9:26 “Nonetheless they grew disobedient and rebelled against you; they disregarded your law. 27 They killed your prophets who had solemnly admonished them in order to cause them to return to you. They committed atrocious blasphemies.
Nehemiah 9:29
Context9:29 And you solemnly admonished them in order to return them to your law, but they behaved presumptuously and did not obey your commandments. They sinned against your ordinances – those by which an individual, if he obeys them, 28 will live. They boldly turned from you; 29 they rebelled 30 and did not obey.
Ezekiel 20:8
Context20:8 But they rebelled against me, and refused to listen to me; no one got rid of their detestable idols, 31 nor did they abandon the idols of Egypt. Then I decided to pour out 32 my rage on them and fully vent my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.
Ezekiel 20:18-21
Context20:18 “‘But I said to their children 33 in the wilderness, “Do not follow the practices of your fathers; do not observe their regulations, 34 nor defile yourselves with their idols. 20:19 I am the Lord your God; follow my statutes, observe my regulations, and carry them out. 20:20 Treat my Sabbaths as holy 35 and they will be a reminder of our relationship, 36 and then you will know that I am the Lord your God.” 20:21 “‘But the children 37 rebelled against me, did not follow my statutes, did not observe my regulations by carrying them out (the one who obeys 38 them will live by them), and desecrated my Sabbaths. I decided to pour out 39 my rage on them and fully vent my anger against them in the wilderness.
Zechariah 7:11
Context7:11 “But they refused to pay attention, turning away stubbornly and stopping their ears so they could not hear.

[3:17] 3 tn Heb “the stubbornness of their evil hearts.”
[6:16] 4 tn The words, “to his people” are not in the text but are implicit in the interchange of pronouns in the Hebrew of vv. 16-17. They are supplied in the translation here for clarity.
[6:16] 5 tn Heb “Stand at the crossroads and look.”

[6:17] 9 tn Heb “I appointed watchmen over you.”
[6:17] 10 tn Heb “Pay attention to the sound of the trumpet.” The word “warning” is not in the Hebrew text, but is implied.
[7:24] 11 tn Or “They went backward and not forward”; Heb “They were to the backward and not to the forward.” The two phrases used here appear nowhere else in the Bible and the latter preposition plus adverb elsewhere is used temporally meaning “formerly” or “previously.” The translation follows the proposal of J. Bright, Jeremiah (AB), 57. Another option is “they turned their backs to me, not their faces,” understanding the line as a variant of a line in 2:27.
[7:26] 12 tn Or “But your predecessors…”; Heb “But they….” There is a confusing interchange in the pronouns in vv. 25-26 which has led to some leveling in the ancient versions and the modern English versions. What is involved here are four levels of referents, the “you” of the present generation (vv. 21-22a), the ancestors who were delivered from Egypt (i.e., the “they” of vv. 22b-24), the “you” of v. 25 which involves all the Israelites from the Exodus to the time of speaking, and the “they” of v. 26 which cannot be the ancestors of vv. 22-24 (since they cannot be more wicked than themselves) but must be an indefinite entity which is a part of the “you” of v. 25, i.e., the more immediate ancestors of the present generation. If this is kept in mind, there is no need to level the pronouns to “they” and “them” or to “you” and “your” as some of the ancient versions and modern English versions have done.
[7:26] 13 tn Heb “hardened [or made stiff] their neck.”
[9:13] 14 tn Heb “and they have not walked in it (with “it” referring to “my law”).

[9:14] 16 tn Heb “the Baals,” referring either to the pagan gods called “Baals” or the images of Baal (so NLT).
[9:14] 17 tn Or “forefathers,” or “ancestors.” Here the referent could be the immediate parents or, by their example, more distant ancestors.
[35:15] 18 tn Heb “Turn, each of you, from his [= your] wicked way and make good your deeds.” Compare 18:11 where the same idiom occurs with the added term of “make good your ways.”
[35:15] 19 tn Heb “Don’t go after/follow other gods.” See the translator’s note on 2:5 for an explanation of the idiom and see 11:10; 13:10; 25:6 for the same idiom.
[44:17] 20 tn Heb “that went out of our mouth.” I.e., everything we said, promised, or vowed.
[44:17] 21 tn Heb “sacrifice to the Queen of Heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” The expressions have been combined to simplify and shorten the sentence. The same combination also occurs in vv. 18, 19.
[44:17] 22 tn Heb “saw [or experienced] no disaster/trouble/harm.”
[9:16] 23 tn Heb “and our fathers.” The vav is explicative.
[9:16] 24 tn Heb “they stiffened their neck” (so also in the following verse).

[9:17] 26 tc The translation follows the Qere reading חֶסֶד (khesed, “loyal love”) rather than the Kethib reading וְחֶסֶד (vÿkhesed, “and loyal love”) of the MT.
[9:26] 27 tn Heb “they cast your law behind their backs.”
[9:29] 28 tn Heb “if a man keep.” See note on the word “obey” in Neh 1:5.
[9:29] 29 tn Heb “they gave a stubborn shoulder.”
[9:29] 30 tn Heb “they stiffened their neck.”
[20:8] 31 tn Heb “each one, the detestable things of their eyes did not throw away.”
[20:8] 32 tn Heb “and I said/thought to pour out.”
