Jeremiah 3:8

3:8 She also saw 1  that I gave wayward Israel her divorce papers and sent her away because of her adulterous worship of other gods. 2  Even after her unfaithful sister Judah had seen this, 3  she still was not afraid, and she too went and gave herself like a prostitute to other gods. 4 

Jeremiah 5:24

5:24 They do not say to themselves, 5 

“Let us revere the Lord our God.

It is he who gives us the autumn rains and the spring rains at the proper time.

It is he who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.” 6 

Jeremiah 35:11

35:11 But when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon invaded the land we said, ‘Let’s get up and go to Jerusalem 7  to get away from the Babylonian 8  and Aramean armies.’ That is why we are staying here in Jerusalem.”

Jeremiah 44:10

44:10 To this day your people 9  have shown no contrition! They have not revered me nor followed the laws and statutes I commanded 10  you and your ancestors.’

[3:8]  1 tc Heb “she [‘her sister, unfaithful Judah’ from the preceding verse] saw” with one Hebrew ms, some Greek mss, and the Syriac version. The MT reads “I saw” which may be a case of attraction to the verb at the beginning of the previous verse.

[3:8]  2 tn Heb “because she committed adultery.” The translation is intended to spell out the significance of the metaphor.

[3:8]  3 tn The words “Even after her unfaithful sister, Judah, had seen this” are not in the Hebrew text but are implicit in the connection and are supplied for clarification.

[3:8]  4 tn Heb “she played the prostitute there.” This is a metaphor for Israel’s worship; she gave herself to the worship of other gods like a prostitute gives herself to her lovers. There seems no clear way to completely spell out the metaphor in the translation.

[5:24]  5 tn Heb “say in their hearts.”

[5:24]  6 tn Heb “who keeps for us the weeks appointed for harvest.”

[35:11]  10 tn Heb “Chaldean.” For explanation see the study note on 21:4.

[44:10]  13 tn Heb “they” but as H. Freedman (Jeremiah [SoBB], 284) notes the third person is used here to include the people just referred to as well as the current addressees. Hence “your people” or “the people of Judah.” It is possible that the third person again reflects the rhetorical distancing that was referred to earlier in 35:16 (see the translator’s note there for explanation) in which case one might translate “you have shown,” and “you have not revered.”

[44:10]  14 tn Heb “to set before.” According to BDB 817 s.v. פָּנֶה II.4.b(g) this refers to “propounding to someone for acceptance or choice.” This is clearly the usage in Deut 30:15, 19; Jer 21:8 and is likely the case here. However, to translate literally would not be good English idiom and “proposed to” might not be correctly understood, so the basic translation of נָתַן (natan) has been used here.
