Israel and Judah Will Be Delivered after a Time of Deep Distress

30:4 So here is what the Lord has to say about Israel and Judah. ¹

44:16 “We will not listen to what you claim the Lord has spoken to us! ²

47:7 But how can it rest ³ 

when I, the Lord, have ⁴  given it orders?

I have ordered it to attack

the people of Ashkelon and the seacoast. ⁵

Judgment Against Babylon

50:1 The Lord spoke concerning Babylon and the land of Babylonia ⁶  through the prophet Jeremiah. ⁷ 

[30:4]  ¹ tn Heb “And these are the words/things that the Lord speaks concerning Israel and Judah.”

[44:16]  ² tn Heb “the word [or message] you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord.” For an explanation of the rendering of “in the name of the Lord” see the study notes on 10:25 and 23:27.

[47:7]  ³ tn The reading here follows the Greek, Syriac, and Latin versions. The Hebrew text reads “how can you rest” as a continuation of the second person in v. 6.

[47:7]  ⁴ tn Heb “When the Lord has.” The first person is again adopted because the Lord has been speaking.

[47:7]  ⁵ tn Heb “Against Ashkelon and the sea coast, there he has appointed it.” For the switch to the first person see the preceding translator’s note. “There” is poetical and redundant and the idea of “attacking” is implicit in “against.”

[50:1]  ⁴ tn Heb “the land of the Chaldeans.” See the study note on 21:4 for explanation.

[50:1]  ⁵ tn Heb “The word which the Lord spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans by the hand of Jeremiah the prophet.”
