Jeremiah 5:24

5:24 They do not say to themselves, 1 

“Let us revere the Lord our God.

It is he who gives us the autumn rains and the spring rains at the proper time.

It is he who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.” 2

Jeremiah 32:40

Context
32:40 I will make a lasting covenant 5  with them that I will never stop doing good to them. 6  I will fill their hearts and minds with respect for me so that 7  they will never again turn 8  away from me.

Jeremiah 51:46

Context

51:46 Do not lose your courage or become afraid

because of the reports that are heard in the land.

For a report will come in one year.

Another report will follow it in the next.

There will be violence in the land

with ruler fighting against ruler.”

[5:24]  1 tn Heb “say in their hearts.”

[5:24]  2 tn Heb “who keeps for us the weeks appointed for harvest.”

[15:16]  3 sn Heb “Your words were found and I ate them.” This along with Ezek 2:83:3 is a poetic picture of inspiration. The prophet accepted them, assimilated them, and made them such a part of himself that he spoke with complete assurance what he knew were God’s words.

[15:16]  4 tn Heb “Your name is called upon me.”

[32:40]  5 tn Heb “an everlasting covenant.” For the rationale for the rendering “agreement” and the nature of the biblical covenants see the study note on 11:2.

[32:40]  6 tn Or “stop being gracious to them” or “stop blessing them with good”; Heb “turn back from them to do good to them.”

[32:40]  7 tn Or “I will make them want to fear and respect me so much that”; Heb “I will put the fear of me in their hearts.” However, as has been noted several times, “heart” in Hebrew is more the center of the volition (and intellect) than the center of emotions as it is in English. Both translations are intended to reflect the difference in psychology.

[32:40]  8 tn The words “never again” are not in the text but are implicit from the context and are supplied not only by this translation but by a number of others.

[51:50]  7 sn God’s exiled people are told to leave doomed Babylon (see v. 45).

[51:50]  8 tn Heb “don’t stand.”

[51:50]  9 tn Heb “let Jerusalem go up upon your heart.” The “heart” is often viewed as the seat of one’s mental faculties and thought life.
