Jeremiah 5:30

5:30 “Something horrible and shocking

is going on in the land of Judah:

8:21 My heart is crushed because my dear people ¹  are being crushed. ² 

I go about crying and grieving. I am overwhelmed with dismay. ³

22:27 You will never come back to this land to which you will long to return!” ⁴

51:37 Babylon will become a heap of ruins.

Jackals will make their home there. ⁵ 

It will become an object of horror and of hissing scorn,

13:7 So I went to Perath and dug up ⁷  the shorts from the place where I had buried them. I found ⁸  that they were ruined; they were good for nothing.

29:7 Work to see that the city where I sent you as exiles enjoys peace and prosperity. Pray to the Lord for it. For as it prospers you will prosper.’

Jeremiah 16:15

16:15 But in that time they will affirm them with ‘I swear as surely as the Lord lives who delivered the people of Israel from the land of the north and from all the other lands where he had banished them.’ At that time I will bring them back to the land I gave their ancestors.” ⁹ 

Jeremiah 46:28

46:28 I, the Lord, tell ¹⁰  you not to be afraid,

you descendants of Jacob, my servant,

for I am with you.

Though I completely destroy all the nations where I scatter you,

I will not completely destroy you.

I will indeed discipline you but only in due measure.

I will not allow you to go entirely unpunished.” ¹¹ 

Jeremiah 40:4

40:4 But now, Jeremiah, today I will set you free ¹²  from the chains on your wrists. If you would like to come to Babylon with me, come along and I will take care of you. ¹³  But if you prefer not to come to Babylon with me, you are not required to do so. ¹⁴  You are free to go anywhere in the land you want to go. ¹⁵  Go wherever you choose.” ¹⁶ 

[8:21]  ¹ tn Heb “daughter of my people.” For the translation given here see 4:11 and the note on the phrase “dear people” there.

[8:21]  ² tn Heb “Because of the crushing of the daughter of my people I am crushed.”

[8:21]  ³ tn Heb “I go about in black [i.e., mourning clothes]. Dismay has seized me.”

[22:27]  ¹ tn Heb “And unto the land to which they lift up their souls to return there, there they will not return.” Once again there is a sudden shift in person from the second plural to the third plural. As before the translation levels the pronouns to avoid confusion. For the idiom “to lift up the soul to” = “to long/yearn to/for” see BDB 670 s.v. נָשָׂא 1.b(9).

[51:37]  ¹ tn Heb “a heap of ruins, a haunt for jackals.” Compare 9:11.

[16:15]  ¹ tn These two verses which constitute one long sentence with compound, complex subordinations has been broken up for sake of English style. It reads, “Therefore, behold the days are coming, says the Lord [Heb ‘oracle of the Lord’] and it will not be said any longer, ‘By the life of the Lord who…Egypt’ but ‘by the life of the Lord who…’ and I will bring them back….”

[46:28]  ¹ tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.” Again the first person is adopted because the Lord is speaking and the indirect quotation is used to avoid an embedded quotation with quotation marks on either side.

[46:28]  ² tn The translation “entirely unpunished” is intended to reflect the emphatic construction of the infinitive absolute before the finite verb.

[40:4]  ¹ tn The verb here is an example of the perfect of resolve where the speaker announces his intention to do something according to IBHS 488-89 §30.5.1d. The word “Jeremiah” is supplied in the translation to avoid the possible misunderstanding that the you is still plural.

[40:4]  ² tn Or “look out for you.” See 39:12 and the translator’s note there.

[40:4]  ³ tn Or “Stay here”; Heb “Forbear.” The imperative is used in a permissive sense; “you may forbear.” See GKC 324 §110.b and compare usage in Gen 50:6.

[40:4]  ⁴ tn Heb “See all the land [or the whole land] is before you.” For this idiom see BDB 817 s.v. פָּנֶה II.4.a(f) and compare the usage in Gen 20:15; 47:6.
