Jeremiah 6:10

Context

6:10 I answered, 1

“Who would listen

if I spoke to them and warned them? 2

Their ears are so closed 3

that they cannot hear!

Indeed, 4  what the Lord says is offensive to them.

They do not like it at all. 5

Jeremiah 51:6

Context

51:6 Get out of Babylonia quickly, you foreign people. 6

Flee to save your lives.

Do not let yourselves be killed because of her sins.

For it is time for the Lord to wreak his revenge.

He will pay Babylonia 7  back for what she has done. 8

Ezekiel 3:18-21

Context
3:18 When I say to the wicked, “You will certainly die,” 9  and you do not warn him – you do not speak out to warn the wicked to turn from his wicked deed and wicked lifestyle so that he may live – that wicked person will die for his iniquity, 10  but I will hold you accountable for his death. 11  3:19 But as for you, if you warn the wicked and he does not turn from his wicked deed and from his wicked lifestyle, he will die for his iniquity but you will have saved your own life. 12

3:20 “When a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I set an obstacle 13  before him, he will die. If you have not warned him, he will die for his sin. The righteous deeds he performed will not be considered, but I will hold you accountable for his death. 3:21 However, if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he 14  does not sin, he will certainly live because he was warned, and you will have saved your own life.”

Ezekiel 33:3-7

Context
33:3 He sees the sword coming against the land, blows the trumpet, 15  and warns the people, 16  33:4 but there is one who hears the sound of the trumpet yet does not heed the warning. Then the sword comes and sweeps him away. He will be responsible for his own death. 17  33:5 He heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, so he is responsible for himself. 18  If he had heeded the warning, he would have saved his life. 33:6 But suppose the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people. Then the sword comes and takes one of their lives. He is swept away for his iniquity, 19  but I will hold the watchman accountable for that person’s death.’ 20

33:7 “As for you, son of man, I have made you a watchman 21  for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you must warn them on my behalf.

Acts 20:31

Context
20:31 Therefore be alert, 22  remembering that night and day for three years I did not stop warning 23  each one of you with tears.

Romans 1:18

Context
The Condemnation of the Unrighteous

1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people 24  who suppress the truth by their 25  unrighteousness, 26

Hebrews 11:7

Context
11:7 By faith Noah, when he was warned about things not yet seen, with reverent regard 27  constructed an ark for the deliverance of his family. Through faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

[6:10]  1 tn These words are not in the text but are supplied in the translation for clarity.

[6:10]  2 tn Or “To whom shall I speak? To whom shall I give warning? Who will listen?” Heb “Unto whom shall I speak and give warning that they may listen?”

[6:10]  3 tn Heb “are uncircumcised.”

[6:10]  4 tn Heb “Behold!”

[6:10]  5 tn Heb “They do not take pleasure in it.”

[51:6]  6 tn The words “you foreign people” are not in the text and many think the referent is the exiles of Judah. While this is clearly the case in v. 45 the referent seems broader here where the context speaks of every man going to his own country (v. 9).

[51:6]  7 tn Heb “her.”

[51:6]  8 tn Heb “paying to her a recompense [i.e., a payment in kind].”

[3:18]  9 sn Even though the infinitive absolute is used to emphasize the warning, the warning is still implicitly conditional, as the following context makes clear.

[3:18]  10 tn Or “in his punishment.” The phrase “in/for [a person’s] iniquity” occurs fourteen times in Ezekiel: here and v. 19; 4:17; 7:13, 16; 18: 17, 18, 19, 20; 24:23; 33:6, 8, 9; 39:23. The Hebrew word for “iniquity” may also mean the “punishment for iniquity.”

[3:18]  11 tn Heb “his blood I will seek from your hand.” The expression “seek blood from the hand” is equivalent to requiring the death penalty (2 Sam 4:11-12).

[3:19]  12 tn Verses 17-19 are repeated in Ezek 33:7-9.

[3:20]  13 tn Or “stumbling block.” The Hebrew term refers to an obstacle in the road in Lev 19:14.

[3:21]  14 tn Heb “the righteous man.”

[33:3]  15 tn Heb “shofar,” a ram’s horn rather than a brass instrument (so throughout the chapter).

[33:3]  16 tn Sounding the trumpet was a warning of imminent danger (Neh 4:18-20; Jer 4:19; Amos 3:6).

[33:4]  17 tn Heb “his blood will be on his own head.”

[33:5]  18 tn Heb “his blood will be on him.”

[33:6]  19 tn Or “in his punishment.” The phrase “in/for [a person’s] iniquity/punishment” occurs fourteen times in Ezekiel: here and in vv. 8 and 9; 3:18, 19; 4:17; 7:13, 16; 18: 17, 18, 19, 20; 24:23; 39:23. The Hebrew word for “iniquity” may also mean the “punishment” for iniquity or “guilt” of iniquity.

[33:6]  20 tn Heb “his blood from the hand of the watchman I will seek.”

[33:7]  21 sn Jeremiah (Jer 6:17) and Habakkuk (Hab 2:1) also served in the role of a watchman.

[20:31]  22 tn Or “be watchful.”

[20:31]  23 tn Or “admonishing.”

[1:18]  24 tn The genitive ἀνθρώπων could be taken as an attributed genitive, in which case the phase should be translated “against all ungodly and unrighteous people” (cf. “the truth of God” in v. 25 which is also probably an attributed genitive). C. E. B. Cranfield takes the section 1:18-32 to refer to all people (not just Gentiles), while 2:1-3:20 points out that the Jew is no exception (Romans [ICC], 1:104-6; 1:137-38).

[1:18]  25 tn “Their” is implied in the Greek, but is supplied because of English style.

[1:18]  26 tn Or “by means of unrighteousness.” Grk “in (by) unrighteousness.”

[11:7]  27 tn Cf. BDAG 407 s.v. εὐλαβέομαι 2, “out of reverent regard (for God’s command).”
