Jeremiah 7:6

7:6 Stop oppressing foreigners who live in your land, children who have lost their fathers, and women who have lost their husbands. ¹  Stop killing innocent people ²  in this land. Stop paying allegiance to ³  other gods. That will only bring about your ruin. ⁴ 

Jeremiah 31:19

31:19 For after we turned away from you we repented.

After we came to our senses ⁵  we beat our breasts in sorrow. ⁶ 

We are ashamed and humiliated

because of the disgraceful things we did previously.’ ⁷

[31:19]  ⁶ tn Heb “I struck my thigh.” This was a gesture of grief and anguish (cf. Ezek 21:12 [21:17 HT]). The modern equivalent is “to beat the breast.”
