John 1:22-23

1:22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us ¹  so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

1:23 John ²  said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight ³  the way for the Lord,’ ⁴  as Isaiah the prophet said.”

[1:22]  ¹ tn The words “Tell us” are not in the Greek but are implied.

[1:23]  ² tn Grk “He”; the referent (John the Baptist) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[1:23]  ³ sn This call to “make straight” is probably an allusion to preparation through repentance.
