[1:51]  1 tn Grk “and he said to him.”

[1:51]  2 tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”

[1:51]  3 sn The title Son of Man appears 13 times in John’s Gospel. It is associated especially with the themes of crucifixion (3:14; 8:28), revelation (6:27; 6:53), and eschatological authority (5:27; 9:35). The title as used in John’s Gospel has for its background the son of man figure who appears in Dan 7:13-14 and is granted universal regal authority. Thus for the author, the emphasis in this title is not on Jesus’ humanity, but on his heavenly origin and divine authority.

[9:3]  4 tn Grk “this one.”

[9:3]  5 tn Grk “but so that.” There is an ellipsis that must be supplied: “but [he was born blind] so that” or “but [it happened to him] so that.”

[9:3]  6 tn Or “deeds”; Grk “works.”

[9:3]  7 tn Or “manifested,” “brought to light.”

[9:3]  8 tn Grk “in him.”

[16:2]  7 tn Or “expel you from.”

[16:2]  8 sn See the note on synagogue in 6:59.

[16:2]  9 tn Grk “an hour.”

[16:2]  10 sn Jesus now refers not to the time of his return to the Father, as he has frequently done up to this point, but to the disciples’ time of persecution. They will be excommunicated from Jewish synagogues. There will even be a time when those who kill Jesus’ disciples will think that they are offering service to God by putting the disciples to death. Because of the reference to service offered to God, it is almost certain that Jewish opposition is intended here in both cases rather than Jewish opposition in the first instance (putting the disciples out of synagogues) and Roman opposition in the second (putting the disciples to death). Such opposition materializes later and is recorded in Acts: The stoning of Stephen in 7:58-60 and the slaying of James the brother of John by Herod Agrippa I in Acts 12:2-3 are notable examples.
