10:1 “I tell you the solemn truth, ¹  the one who does not enter the sheepfold ²  by the door, ³  but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.

Peter’s First Denial

18:15 Simon Peter and another disciple followed them as they brought Jesus to Annas. ⁴  (Now the other disciple ⁵  was acquainted with the high priest, and he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.) ⁶ 

[10:1]  ¹ tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”

[10:1]  ² sn There was more than one type of sheepfold in use in Palestine in Jesus’ day. The one here seems to be a courtyard in front of a house (the Greek word used for the sheepfold here, αὐλή [aulh] frequently refers to a courtyard), surrounded by a stone wall (often topped with briars for protection).

[10:1]  ³ tn Or “entrance.”

[18:15]  ⁴ tn The words “them as they brought Jesus to Annas” are not in the Greek text, but are supplied to clarify who Peter and the other disciple were following. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[18:15]  ⁵ tn Grk “that disciple.”

[18:15]  ⁶ sn This is a parenthetical note by the author.
