  If death my friend and me divide, Thou dost not, Lord, my sorrow chide, Or frown my tears to see; Restrained from passionate excess, Thou bidst me mourn in calm distress For them that rest in Thee. I feel a strong immortal hope, Which bears my mournful spirit up Beneath its mountain load; Redeemed from death, and grief, and pain, I soon shall find my friend again Within the arms of God. Pass a few fleeting moments more And death the blessing shall restore Which death has snatched away; For me Thou wilt the summons send, And give me back my parted friend In that eternal day.

• [Joh 11:23] Within The Churchyard, Side By Side

  Within the churchyard, side by side, Are many long low graves; And some have stones set over them, On some the green grass waves. Full many a little Christian child, Woman, and man, lies there; And we pass near them every time When we go in to prayer. They cannot hear our footsteps come, They do not see us pass; They cannot feel the warm bright sun That shines upon the grass. They do not hear when the great bell Is ringing overhead; They cannot rise and come to church With us, for they are dead. But we believe a day shall come When all the dead will rise, When they who sleep down in the grass, Will ope again their eyes. For Christ our Lord was buried once, He died and rose again, He conquered death, He left the grave; And so will Christian men. So when the friends we love the best Lie in their churchyard bed, We must not cry too bitterly Over the happy dead; Because, for our dear Savior’s sake, Our sins are all forgiv’n; And Christians only fall asleep To wake again in Heav’n.

  The Master hath come, and He calls us to follow The track of the footprints He leaves on our way; Far over the mountain and through the deep hollow, The path leads us on to the mansions of day: The Master hath called us, the children who fear Him, Who march ’neath Christ’s banner, His own little band; We love Him and seek Him, we long to be near Him, And rest in the light of His beautiful land. The Master hath called us; the road may be dreary And dangers and sorrows are strewn on the track; But God’s Holy Spirit shall comfort the weary; We follow the Savior and cannot turn back; The Master hath called us, though doubt and temptation May compass our journey, we cheerfully sing: “Press onward, look upward,” through much tribulation; The children of Zion must follow the King.   Jesus wept! those tears are over, But His heart is still the same; Kinsman, Friend, and elder Brother, Is His everlasting Name. Savior, who can love like Thee, Gracious One of Bethany? When the pangs of trial seize us, When the waves of sorrow roll, I will lay my head on Jesus, Refuge of the troubled soul. Surely, none can feel like Thee, Weeping One of Bethany! Jesus wept! and still in glory, He can mark each mourner’s tear; Loving to retrace the story Of the hearts He solaced here. Lord, when I am called to die, Let me think of Bethany. Jesus wept! that tear of sorrow Is a legacy of love; Yesterday, today, tomorrow, He the same doth ever prove, Thou art all in all to me, Loving One of Bethany! Who is this in silence bending O’er a dark sepulchral cave? Sympathetic sorrow blending With the tears around that grave? Christ the Lord is standing by, At the tomb of Bethany.
