John 13:35-38

13:35 Everyone ¹  will know by this that you are my disciples – if you have love for one another.”

13:36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, ²  “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.” 13:37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!” ³  13:38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? ⁴  I tell you the solemn truth, ⁵  the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!

[13:35]  ¹ tn Grk “All people,” although many modern translations have rendered πάντες (pantes) as “all men” (ASV, RSV, NASB, NIV). While the gender of the pronoun is masculine, it is collective and includes people of both genders.

[13:36]  ² tn Grk “Jesus answered him.”

[13:37]  ³ tn Or “I will die willingly for you.”

[13:38]  ⁴ tn Or “Will you die willingly for me?”
