[13:8]  1 tn Grk “You will never wash my feet forever.” The negation is emphatic in Greek but somewhat awkward in English. Emphasis is conveyed in the translation by the use of an exclamation point.

[13:8]  2 tn Grk “Jesus answered him.”

[13:8]  3 tn Or “you have no part in me.”

[17:1]  4 tn Grk “he raised his eyes” (an idiom).

[17:1]  5 tn Or “to the sky.” The Greek word οὐρανός (ouranos) may be translated “sky” or “heaven” depending on the context.

[17:1]  6 tn Grk “the hour.”

[17:1]  7 tc The better witnesses (א B C* W 0109 0301) have “the Son” (ὁ υἱός, Jo Juios) here, while the majority (C3 L Ψ Ë13 33 Ï) read “your Son also” (καὶ ὁ υἱὸς σου, kai Jo Juio" sou), or “your Son” (ὁ υἱὸς σου; A D Θ 0250 1 579 pc lat sy); the second corrector of C has καὶ ὁ υἱός (“the Son also”). The longer readings appear to be predictable scribal expansions and as such should be considered secondary.

[17:11]  7 tn Grk And I.” The conjunction καί (kai, “and”) has not been translated here in keeping with the tendency of contemporary English style to use shorter sentences.

[17:11]  8 tn The context indicates that this should be translated as an adversative or contrastive conjunction.

[17:11]  9 tn Or “protect them”; Grk “keep them.”

[17:11]  10 tn Or “by your name.”

[17:11]  11 tn The second repetition of “one” is implied, and is supplied here for clarity.

[18:26]  10 tn See the note on the word “slaves” in 4:51.

[18:26]  11 sn This incident is recounted in v. 10.

[18:26]  12 tn Or “garden.”

[18:26]  13 tn This question, prefaced with οὐκ (ouk) in Greek, anticipates a positive answer.

[21:16]  13 tn Grk “He”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[21:16]  14 tn Grk “said again.” The word “again” (when used in connection with the phrase “a second time”) is redundant and has not been translated.

[21:16]  15 tn Grk “He said to him.”

[21:16]  16 tn Grk “He”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[21:18]  16 tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”

[21:18]  17 tn Or “you girded yourself.”

[21:18]  18 tn Grk “others will gird you.”

[21:20]  19 tn The word “them” is not in the Greek text but is implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[21:20]  20 tn The words “This was the disciple” are not in the Greek text, but are supplied for clarity.

[21:20]  21 tn Grk “his”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[21:20]  22 tn Grk “and said.”

[21:20]  23 sn This is a parenthetical note by the author.
