[2:1]  1 map For location see Map1 C3; Map2 D2; Map3 C5.

[2:1]  2 sn Cana in Galilee was not a very well-known place. It is mentioned only here, in 4:46, and 21:2, and nowhere else in the NT. Josephus (Life 16 [86]) says he once had his quarters there. The probable location is present day Khirbet Cana, 8 mi (14 km) north of Nazareth, or Khirbet Kenna, 4 mi (7 km) northeast of Nazareth.

[2:1]  3 tn Grk “in Galilee, and Jesus’ mother.”

[5:11]  4 tn Or “pallet,” “mattress,” “cot,” or “stretcher.” See the note on “mat” in v. 8.

[5:12]  7 tc While a number of mss, especially the later ones (Ac C3 D Θ Ψ Ë1,13 33 Ï latt sy), include the words τον κραβ(β)ατ(τ)ον σου (ton krab(b)at(t)on sou, “your mat”) here, the earliest and best (Ì66,75 א B C* L) do not. Nevertheless, in the translation, it is necessary to supply the words due to the demands of English style, which does not typically allow for understood or implied direct objects as Greek does.

[5:12]  8 tn Grk “Pick up and walk”; the object (the mat) is implied but not repeated.

[5:47]  10 tn Grk “that one” (“he”); the referent (Moses) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[6:9]  13 tn Grk “but what are these”; the word “good” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

[6:62]  16 tn Or “he was formerly?”

[6:66]  19 tn Grk “many of his disciples went back to what lay behind.”

[6:66]  20 tn Grk “were not walking with him.”

[7:14]  22 tn Grk “to the temple.”

[7:14]  23 tn Or “started teaching.” An ingressive sense for the imperfect verb (“began to teach” or “started teaching”) fits well here, since the context implies that Jesus did not start his teaching at the beginning of the festival, but began when it was about half over.

[7:19]  25 tn Or “accomplishes”; Grk “does.”

[7:19]  26 tn Grk “seek.”

[7:41]  28 tn Or “the Messiah” (Both Greek “Christ” and Hebrew and Aramaic “Messiah” mean “one who has been anointed”).

[7:41]  29 tn An initial negative reply (“No”) is suggested by the causal or explanatory γάρ (gar) which begins the clause.

[7:41]  30 tn Questions prefaced with μή (mh) in Greek anticipate a negative answer. This can sometimes be indicated by using a “tag” at the end in English (here the tag is “does he?”).

[8:35]  31 tn Or “household.” The Greek work οἰκία (oikia) can denote the family as consisting of relatives by both descent and marriage, as well as slaves and servants, living in the same house (more the concept of an “extended family”).

[8:35]  32 sn Jesus’ point is that while a slave may be part of a family or household, the slave is not guaranteed a permanent place there, while a son, as a descendant or blood relative, will always be guaranteed a place in the family (remains forever).

[10:4]  34 tn The word “sheep” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

[10:4]  35 tn Grk “because they know.”

[11:20]  37 sn Notice the difference in the response of the two sisters: Martha went out to meet Jesus, while Mary remains sitting in the house. It is similar to the incident in Luke 10:38-42. Here again one finds Martha occupied with the responsibilities of hospitality; she is the one who greets Jesus.

[12:4]  40 sn This is a parenthetical note by the author.

[13:2]  43 tn Or “Supper.” To avoid possible confusion because of different regional English usage regarding the distinction between “dinner” and “supper” as an evening meal, the translation simply refers to “the evening meal.”

[13:2]  44 sn At this point the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, that he should betray Jesus. C. K. Barrett (St. John, 365) thought this was a reference to the idea entering the devil’s own heart, but this does not seem likely. It is more probable that Judas’ heart is meant, since the use of the Greek article (rather than a possessive pronoun) is a typical idiom when a part of one’s own body is indicated. Judas’ name is withheld until the end of the sentence for dramatic effect (emphasis). This action must be read in light of 13:27, and appears to refer to a preliminary idea or plan.

[13:2]  45 tn Or “that he should hand over.”

[13:2]  46 tn Grk “betray him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[16:1]  46 tn Grk “so that you will not be caused to stumble.”
