John 3:8

3:8 The wind ¹  blows wherever it will, and you hear the sound it makes, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” ² 

John 16:19

16:19 Jesus could see ³  that they wanted to ask him about these things, ⁴  so ⁵  he said to them, “Are you asking ⁶  each other about this – that I said, ‘In a little while you ⁷  will not see me; again after a little while, you ⁸  will see me’?

John 17:24

17:24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, ⁹  so that they can see my glory that you gave me because you loved me before the creation of the world ¹⁰ .

[3:8]  ¹ tn The same Greek word, πνεύματος (pneumatos), may be translated “wind” or “spirit.”

[3:8]  ² sn Again, the physical illustrates the spiritual, although the force is heightened by the word-play here on wind-spirit (see the note on wind at the beginning of this verse). By the end of the verse, however, the final usage of πνεύματος (pneumatos) refers to the Holy Spirit.

[16:19]  ³ tn Grk “knew.”

[16:19]  ⁴ tn The words “about these things” are not in the Greek text, but are implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[16:19]  ⁵ tn Καί (kai) has been translated as “so” here to indicate the following statement is a result of Jesus’ observation in v. 19a.

[16:19]  ⁶ tn Grk “inquiring” or “seeking.”

[16:19]  ⁷ tn Grk “A little while, and you.”

[16:19]  ⁸ tn Grk “and again a little while, and you.”

[17:24]  ⁵ tn Grk “the ones you have given me, I want these to be where I am with me.”
