4:17 The woman replied, ¹  “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “Right you are when you said, ²  ‘I have no husband,’ ³

19:10 So Pilate said, ⁴  “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know I have the authority ⁵  to release you, and to crucify you?” ⁶ 

[4:17]  ¹ tn Grk “answered and said to him.”

[4:17]  ² tn Grk “Well have you said.”

[4:17]  ³ tn The word order in Jesus’ reply is reversed from the woman’s original statement. The word “husband” in Jesus’ reply is placed in an emphatic position.

[19:10]  ⁴ tn Grk “said to him.” The words “to him” are not translated because they are unnecessary in contemporary English style.

[19:10]  ⁵ tn Or “the power.”

[19:10]  ⁶ tn Grk “know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you.” Repetition of “the authority” is unnecessarily redundant English style.
